I have sung leading and supporting roles with Cincinnati Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Opera Memphis, Central City Opera, Opera Omaha, Salt Marsh Opera, Dayton Opera, Kentucky Opera, Ohio Light Opera, Opera New Jersey, and internationally in England, Italy, and Bulgaria. Former students have performed on Broadway, on National and International tours, and have been accepted to prestigious collegiate music programs. For my dissertation I wrote a vocal pedagogy book entitled "The Vocal Instrument: A Manual for Composers", which discusses how compositional choices and poor text-setting by a composer can inhibit breath efficiency, vocal production, and resonance. I am currently editing the book for publication! In 2020, I founded the Coastal Connecticut Music Academy, which currently offers voice and piano lessons, but will soon expand to include most marching band and orchestral instruments.

Dr. Stinson is well-versed and experienced in all areas of voice, including opera, classical, musical theater, and pop. While working with him, I was able to improve both my vocal technique and my vocal confidence tenfold. Dr. Stinson also goes out of his way to provide opportunities for his students to perform, including organizing a musical theater showcase for 6 older students. In a classical music setting, he opened the door for students to learn the mechanics of theater singing, which I greatly appreciated. I believe that working with Dr. Stinson contributes to what makes me a good musician today, and I would highly recommend him to anyone of any age looking for a voice teacher.

I studied with Dr. Stinson from August 2015 to May 2018, during my undergraduate degree at the Crane School of Music. From selecting semesterly repertoire that fit my voice, in addition to the congruency of my interests, Dr. Stinson is an overall well-rounded, and extremely experienced vocalist, educator, and musician. His lessons go in depth to the physics of singing and how what is happening all around the inner cavities including “the mask,” informs healthy vocal technique. With expert knowledge of styles ranging from early opera to musical theatre, Dr. Stinson draws connections between different genres and educationally questions stigmatization of the “classical voice.” Lastly, the rapport that Dr. Stinson creates with his students supports a positive learning environment with a sense of humor, while still maintaining a professional work space. His wealth of musical knowledge and vocal pedagogy is like no other; I highly recommend Dr. Jonathan Stinson.

Jonathan is by far the best vocal instructor I've ever had. Having worked with him for 2 full years while in undergrad, he completely reworked my voice from the ground up, re-teaching what I thought I knew. You won't find a more talented vocal teacher.
