Over the years I have developed techniques that streamline this learning process. If, for example, you are just beginning I have a technique called "Targets and Adjustments" that allows you to learn to play chords and move from one to another easily. And you master this in weeks -- not months.

If you are someone who has played for some time but find that you're stuck doing the same things, or everything you play sound the same, I teach you to develop your own unique rhythm and strumming patterns for each song you choose to play. Using techniques such as "6 Dead Strings", you create your own style, without having to practice "model strums". Easier, original, and much more efficient.

If you are an advanced guitarist or a professional, I can teach you how to give your performance structure and elegance. Using techniques such as "Complimentary Pattern Evolution" you not only hold the interest of the listener, but take them places they did not expect to go.

About David D.

I've been playing guitar since I was 9 years old and teaching guitar since I was 14. I grew up playing in bands with friends. My parents would drive us (and a ton of equipment!) to wherever we were playing, which was sometimes 50 to 200 miles from home! I later did studio work and played as a solo entertainer. I also studied acting while in college, so being on stage and performing is very comfortable for me.
I have extensive experience in teaching both individuals and groups with regard to several different venues, including guitar, bass guitar, acting, public speaking, songwriting and studio recording.
I also provide a unique service that my students tell me is very helpful. I record instructions, or demonstrations, and email them to you - on the spot! This way you don't get home and wonder "Now how did that go?" or, " How was I able to do that?" You just open the email and listen to it – whenever you like.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is geared toward each individual student. Everyone has different specific interests and desired outcomes, so my lessons are based on your priorities and your goals. Beginning with your first lesson you should feel inspired and excited! Even if you are just beginning to learn an instrument, you need to have a teacher who can supply you with what you need AND have you playing things that you like within a very short time.
This applies to all types of music; rock, standards, folk, metal, classic rock, popular, country, whatever you want to play. Beginner or advanced. So it's up to you -- just tell me what you want to get out of the lessons, and that is what we do! I may be the instructor, but YOU are the director.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Martin 1963 "000-18" acoustic guitar
Fender Telecaster electric guitar
Acoustic Amplifier (Acoustic is the brand name)
Digital Recorder (portions of lessons are recorded & emailed to you)
Digital Video Recorder (portions videoed and emailed to you)
All music, tab, and diagrams are supplied at no additional cost

*** Travel Equipment ***

Dave is an amazing teacher and I can't thank him enough for all he has taught me. I had to take a short break for personal reasons, but will not hesitate to go back to him as soon as I can restart. He is very knowledgeable and a great player and tailors the learning around songs you want to play so to keep you engaged and having fun. Great learning environment in a nice neighborhood I highly recommend Dave if you are wanting to learn how to play!

I have taken private lessons on various instruments from several instructors and David is by far the best. Learn at your own pace, play the music you want to play, he is very encouraging, and professional to name a few. Just because someone knows how to play the guitar does not mean they know how to teach someone how to play the guitar. David definitely knows both.

I strongly encourage you to give him a try, you have nothing to lose. You will learn how to play from the first lesson

Dave Doud is a great instructor. He teaches guitar as you need it taught. For me, an adult (well, chronologically anyway) that picked up the guitar in my early 50s, Dave caters my lessons around what I want to learn. None of that "back of the guitar store teaching music", he teaches me through techniques I need to play Pink Floyd, The Beatles, the Stones, etc. When it's time to work on advanced stuff, we move to Pearl Jam or any band I choose. The other day, he was teaching me some fingerpicking through CSNY. Get it? Nothing about Mary's little lamb here, just great instruction with a super guy that teaches you to play what you want to play! Highly recommended!

Dave is an outstanding guitar teacher. Very knowledgeable and super patient. I am learning lead guitar and the songs I like. It's great to get good feedback as you learn so you can improve more quickly. I would definitely not hesitate to recommend Dave to players who know the basics and want to take their playing to a higher level. It is obvious that Dave is a talented teacher and enjoys helping others. I look forward to my one hour session.

The Joy of Learning Music

He lights up the room when he picks up his guitar and plays! Dave draws his students in with his welcoming smile and sparkling eyes that seem to say, "I'm having so much fun here and I want you to have fun, too." His pure enjoyment ignites a spark in us. We're motivated to have that kind of fun with our music while studying hard to advance our skills and techniques and reach our personal goals.

Dave is the consummate teacher--he energizes and inspires, he is trustworthy, of impeccable character, a guitarist extraordinaire, a former counselor whose mission in life is to help others achieve success. He conducts every class with good humor and patience. He is an inventive instructor with a toolbox of unique ways students can learn skills and techniques more easily. He is an honest appraiser of our work whose positive comments encourage and motivate us. He's Dave, who knows and teaches every aspect of guitar repertoire--country, blues, gospel, pop, rock, etc. His instruction is centered on the student's music preferences and goals, and he integrates a progression of the skills and techniques we need to learn with the music we choose. Practice is welcome, as it brings us closer to playing the music we love. Dave is the teacher who opens doors to new aspects of music and encourages us to reach beyond our expectations for ourselves. It's amazing what we find beyond that horizon.

Dave is a teacher for all students. Whatever your talents and aspirations, you will achieve your goals. And along the way, you'll be the one saying, "I'm having so much fun here!"

Dave is a treasure, and taking lessons with him is a truly joyful experience!

David

Would like to take the time to tell you how much I like taking lessons from David Doud. I have been taking lessons for 3 years now from teacher to teacher. The lesson's I was taking was not going directions I wanted to go. I just wanted to play guitar and make a song book up. When I called David up I explained to him what I wanted and he delivered. In a very short time I created a song book and my guitar playing getting better buy the week. January of next year I will turn 71 year old. I will continue to take lessons from David for a long time. I look forward to each weeks lesson with David because he make's lesson's so interesting and understandable and fun.I did not have that with other teachers they just made the lessons to hard and not fun. Top-notch instructor

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and have played guitar and bass at a semi-pro level in the past, but I still wanted help improving my soloing improvisation and finger style skills. Dave's experience both as a player and teacher made him the ideal teacher for me. He makes it all about what I want to learn, not what he wants to teach me, which is ideal for an advanced student. He uses a combination of drills and songs to introduce and reinforce the skills I'm trying to learn, which makes my practice time more entertaining and less of a chore. Dave's instruction and encouragement have been invaluable in helping me reach my playing goals.

Excellent Instructor

Bought a guitar on a whim and needed to take lessons. Rather then go through the big box stores for lessons, I researched to find someone who had experience with guitars and giving lessons. Found David's information along with a video on how he teaches the guitar. He has a different approach which makes sense and is easy to learn.
David makes the guitar fun to learn. He is very professional and really knows the guitar and how to teach. You learn at your own pace. I would really recommend giving him a try.
