Teaching since:
2010

I am currently earning my M.A in musicology at Hunter College and have been studying, teaching, and performing in NYC since 2002. My musical training really took off when I was awarded the Lundquist International Fellowship in 2001. This supported a year of study in Ghana, West Africa, and inspired me to continue my musical training at a professional level when I returned home to NY.

Upon returning, my interest in jazz grew immensely and I studied diligently with drummers Vinnie Sperrazza and Dan Weiss, and vibraphonist Tommy Mattioli. After years of intensive study and performing I began teaching in 2010. I have toured the U.S multiple times with different ensembles and also compose my own music for quintet.

I absolutely love teaching and will be applying to PhD programs next year to further this wonderful endeavor. I feel fortunate to have been taught the lineage and progression of Western drumming from its African roots to its current manifestations in jazz and rock music. It is my honor to take students through the stages of practice that so many of the greats went through, while also demonstrating newer techniques and concepts as the styles evolve. It is my sincere pleasure to share this excellent art form.

I have been fortunate enough to discover a wonderful teacher and his name is Daniel Schubmehl. A humble, kind and nurturing teacher, I would recommend Daniel to anyone looking to improve their understanding of music theory, basic composition, drumming (kit or hand drum) and even piano. I found Daniel to be very sensitive to my needs as a student. While tailoring lessons designed to my interests, he also finds ways to introduce other exercises or perspectives that have proven helpful in my development as a musician. If I ever asked Daniel a question that he did not know the answer to, we would seek out the answer together, or he would take the time between our lessons to research my question. I very much appreciate his patience, attentiveness and perspectives. Daniel has helped me become a more sensitive musician and has strengthened my desire to pursue deeper understanding. His lessons are fun while also being incredibly effective and informative.

Very comfortable, patient, and thought-provoking teaching style. Daniel has a knack for breaking down complex ideas at the drum set as well as revealing the depth of seemingly simple ideas. Whether it is with rudiments, technique, jazz comping, or polyrhythms, Daniel has a natural interest in listening to you and catering his lessons to meet your goals."

Daniel's philosophical, measured approach to music-teaching is excellent. He's patient, thoughtful, and his love and excitement for the drums, and music theory, is evident. He's also fun -- lessons with him are a great experience.

Daniel does a wonderful job of connecting the instrument and the individual while being extremely patient, thoughtful and present throughout the lesson. It can be a challenge to keep our children engaged; however, Daniel somehow pulls it off both with the drumsticks and piano. He brings a lot of experience, passion for music and a genuine interest in helping our children grasp basic concepts and beyond.

We’ve also seen the lessons developing beyond music both in their reading and math and always smile when we hear our children ask Alexa to play Dave Brubeck and Ella Fitzgerald!

Thank you, Daniel, for making lessons informative, fun and time our children always look forward to.
