Drum Lessons from the DIY School

Not to brag or anything, but I have been drumming for 16 years! In that time I have played in a dozen bands, performed in hundreds of shows, recorded a few LPs and EPs, toured, and taught private lessons. I am mostly self-taught on the drums, so instead of a degree in music (I studied creative writing and sociology) I offer you the lack of pretension and acceptance of all that comes from my DIY experience. I teach all ages and levels, and am available virtually or in-person in the NYC area, with a rehearsal studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn with an acoustic drum kit and optional electronic drum pad.

    About Cory R.

Hello, my name is Cory R. and I would love to teach you how to drum! I have been playing the drums for 16 years (with one consistent year of giving private lessons, and sporadic lessons in between). I graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Bachelors of Arts, where I studied creative writing and sociology (where my academic interests were at the time), but my passion for drumming never waned. I love sharing my passion for drumming with others, whether friends, students, fellow musicians, or new and improving percussionists of all ages. Drumming has helped me and helps students develop their coordination, attention, retention, confidence, patience, communication skills, and generally aids in physical and cognitive functioning--not to mention it is FUN! Percussion students can expect to learn and improve on proper grip, form, coordination, how to practice productively, reading and writing drum notation, and advanced techniques for the drum kit, solo snare, etc. Various styles including Rock, Indie Rock, Hard Rock, Alternative, Pop, Punk, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul, and R&B.
