Hi! My name is Carrie and I have been in love with the clarinet since I first heard it at 8 years old. I have been teaching privately for almost 30 years and have held an online studio for over 10 years, teaching across many states and advancing students to their next levels of performance. I teach because it's incredibly exciting watching students reach their individual goals, whether it's learning their band/orchestra music well or preparing for the next college audition. I work on learning about you and your personality so that I may better customize the lessons with etudes and solos that "fit" you. There's never just one path to get to the end goal, and it's important to enjoy the journey as well! I'd love to be a part of your journey, so let's get started! "Don't learn for the moment, learn for the lifetime".
About Carrie R.

Hi, I'm Carrie! I am a freelance clarinetist, clinician, teacher, and I am currently on faculty at Indiana University Southeast. I am truly honored to be a Backun Performing Artist and I get to share my music with their beautiful instruments. It's important to be a flexible musician, and my performances include the Louisville Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Keep Louisville Symphonic, Louisville Chamber Winds, the Louisville Ballet, the Kentucky Opera, and Sacred Winds. My passion is sharing my knowledge with others, and I keep an active private teaching studio as well as teaching masterclasses in the local schools and universities as a visiting guest artist. I have coached several clarinet chamber groups for competition and prepare students for their auditions. My goal is to help each student reach their goals, and lessons are focused on individuals and not premade lesson plans. I have been a guest soloist at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest, where I performed the solo work Perceptions of Strife, which was written for me in 2011. I was also a guest artist for WoodwindFest 2020, the world’s first international virtual woodwind festival, performing the music of Jenni Brandon. Over the past 4 years I have commissioned 5 local composers to create new works for the clarinet & chamber ensemble, to showcase the talent that lives here in our state. In April 2022, I will perform the world premiere of Firefly for solo Eb clarinet and wind ensemble, commissioned by the Indiana University Southeast Concert Band and written by local composer Dr. Erich Stem. I am also the co-founder and clarinetist of the contemporary music ensemble A/Tonal; our mission is to share with audiences the correlations between traditional classical works and works of living composers. Over the past 4 years commissioned 5 local composers to create new works for clarinet and chamber ensemble, to showcase the talent that lives here in our state. We begin recording the CD in Spring 2022.

Carrie’s teaching was transformational for my musical growth. I am primarily an oboist, and after playing around on clarinet for a while I decided I wanted to study it more seriously. Carrie’s was the first name in my mind. I knew of her playing skills already from being at UofL at the same time and there was no one else I wanted to learn from. I am so glad I sought her out, as she provided me with a rock-solid foundation for further clarinet study. Though I was only able to study with her for a few months, she lead me to grow musically far more than I thought possible. Carrie’s teaching style is very direct yet warm and friendly. I was never afraid to make a mistake, and I knew that each mistake I made would be an opportunity for her to help me improve. She always made sure that any questions I had were thoroughly answered, and I always felt comfortable sharing things I was unsure of or that I knew I needed to be better at. She is a very charismatic person and effortlessly builds rapport with students. Because of this, I was always very comfortable with her critique of my playing. She was very practical in ensuring that all the fundamentals were well understood, and constantly connected back to them as I progressed. I am pursuing my teaching certificate in music education now and so much of what I learned with Carrie I use with my clarinet students and all my students generally. She is simply a fantastic teacher, clarinetist, and person.
