Play viola with ease through lessons from an experienced violist and teacher

The viola is my main instrument. I have been teaching viola for over twenty-five years. I teach both traditional western methods and Suzuki style. I have a Doctorate in the Viola. I am very experienced teaching all ages and levels. I teach out of my home studio in Scottsdale. I have been fortunate to have studied with the finest viola teachers in the Nation and worked with giants in the conducting world. I no longer take beginning viola students. I no longer take special needs students. If you have ever dreamed of learning to play music, I can help you make that dream come true.

I've completed about 1 year of lessons with Carolyn, and my experience has been exceptional. Carolyn is insightful and encouraging. She knows when to offer critical feedback and when to offer positive feedback based on her student's temperament. She also paces progress based on the student's aptitude, too. I'd recommend Carolyn for any beginning string musician without any hesitation.

    HIghly Qualified

    Jul, 2002

    Arizona Department of Education

In order to be determined as a "Highly Qualified" teacher in the State of Arizona, I had to take a minimum of 30 college units of graduate level music teaching courses. I also had to pass a National music exam and a National education exam at the secondary level. The National music teaching exam is notorious for being extremely hard. Many music teachers fail this exam several times before passing it. I passed both exams on the first try. This may be due to having gone through some even more difficult music exams at ASU in order to earn my Doctorate in Music.

    Arizona Teaching Certification

    May, 2014

    Arizona Department of Education

The Arizona Teaching Certification is a state license to teach in the public schools. It requires about 30 college hours of educational course work, as well as classes in English as a second language, and Arizona State History. This certification also includes teaching music under a master teacher in the classroom at both the elementary level and the secondary level. The coursework is very specific and includes practicum, classroom management skills, and teaching strategies.
