Music and music teaching is my first love and passion in life. (Feel free to check out my video and music!) To be able to study and play the guitar for the last 11 years has been an immense blessing! I am a guitar teacher with a degree in music from Biola University, La Mirada. I have been teaching lessons privately almost 9 years now. I am trained in various styles of guitar music including classical, jazz, pop, rock, blues, and finger-style on both acoustic and electric guitars. My musical journey began in the 6th grade when my parents purchased a nylon string classical guitar for me. Throughout my high school and college years I participated in contemporary rock ensembles for corporate worship at my church and other churches. This included leading and singing as well. While enrolled at the Biola Conservatory of Music I played in the classical guitar ensemble for 5 semesters. My experience includes playing in jazz ensembles, doing solo guitar music at weddings and art galleries, playing in classical guitar quartets, and active composition and recording of my original work on the guitar. You can expect all of this experience and knowledge to come together in a musically fascinating and motivating way that will fill your life with the joys of being able to express yourself musically if you are willing to give the time and effort to do so. *** Lesson Details ***
My number one goal is to cultivate your desire and passion for musical expression by providing a friendly and inspiring environment in which to experience the joy and beauty of music! You can learn the songs you have always wanted to play and even learn to write your own music! My overall teaching philosophy includes three basic areas of knowledge which work together to form a well educated guitarist. The first area is technical knowledge. The student will be taught to physically utilize the instrument in an efficient and effective way in order to maximize learning progress and musical potential. The second area is in theoretical knowledge which includes reading both music notation and tablature (tablature is an alternative form of written guitar music that is very easy to read). This also includes understanding music theory as it applies to the guitar, and full knowledge of the musical possibilities on the guitar. The third area, my favorite area, is Practical knowledge which includes learning songs by other artists to expand the student's understanding of how other musicians use the instrument (the students choose these songs based on what they like). You will also expand your practical knowledge by directly applying the theoretical knowledge that you have learned. This is done by composing your own music in a creative and original way. I am also a vocalist and am able to coach my students the basics of the voice and how to use the voice and guitar at the same time. As a teacher I strive for excellence in my students by teaching them all that they need to be a well educated guitarist. I will actively and joyfully peruse your interests by tailoring the curriculum to focus on the music that the you love and have a passion for.
I provide my own music curriculum that has been honed over time through my experience as a private teacher. The books that I use will generally differ according to your desires and interests but there are two books that I use for beginners:
1. Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 (this is for beginners in music reading).
2. Solo Guitar Playing Volume 1 (this is for beginners in music reading who are interested in classical training).
After 3 to 6 months of study with me, you will have been taught to read musical notation, have a basic knowledge of chords, and have most of the 5 major scale shapes memorized. You will have learned to pick and strum confidently. Most importantly, you will have learned 3 or 4 songs of your choosing so that you can see the fruit of your musical work and experience the joy of musical expression. (for these results students must be willing to practice for the necessary amount of time: 20-30 minutes a day)
*** Studio Equipment ***
Comfortable quiet room. Recording equipment. Internet musical resources. Guitars, Guitar effects, amps, and hardware. I provide my personally developed teaching material to you. I expect you, as a student, to bring a guitar, picks and a tuner.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my personally developed teaching material to you. I bring cables and equipment to adapt my guitar to an amp you may have. I also bring maintenance equipment in case I need to work on my guitar or yours. I expect you, as a student, to have a guitar, picks and a tuner. If you are taking electric guitar it is ideal that you have an amp. I also expect you to buy the necessary books. I bring my computer in order to have an internet source and an audio source. I have provided guitars and strings (if one broke during the lesson) in the past to students who are lacking them.

My teen age son is enjoying learning the guitar from Byron. Byron seems to relate well to my son and understands the kind of music he's interested in. He's had three lessons and so far so good!
Wonderful with kids, made an immediate bond with my daughter. Does a great job of teaching.

Byron is an amazing teacher. He started with my son when he was 8 and he is now 10 and doing very well. He really knows how to keep kids interested and I would highly recommend him to other students.
Byron is a great guitar teacher. He has an obvious deep musical background. He can create tabs by ear and tailor to the level of the student. Keeps it interesting by using music that the student likes. Very happy with him as a teacher.
My son has made such great progress under Byron's instruction. He has a good balance of teaching strong technique while keeping it fun. He teaches a broad spectrum of songs that my son gets to choose instead of just going through a book. I would highly recommend Byron as a guitar instructor.+ Read More
My son has been studying with Mr. Byron for over 1 year. He is the best private teacher we have ever had. He's a true musician that always amazed us with his skills and understanding of the music. He allows my son to choose some songs he wants to learn and changed them into simpler version so he can play. The class us fun and encouraging. He also gives enough push to let my son take more challenge.+ Read More
He was able to adjust the lessons to my daughter's needs. Very accommodating. His enthusiasm for what he does was obvious. Absolutely recommend!
Byron is an amazing teacher! Thanks to Byron, our son, who is autistic-high functioning, is learning far more than how to play the guitar. He is learning to sit in a chair for a half an hour, is learning to focus on notes and strings, and is learning to love music! It’s an amazing sight to see! We are grateful that our son, and others with special needs, can also learn to play the guitar. We appreciate Byron’s patience and fun approach. Teachers with his character and abilities are hard to find. Byron is a true blessing and gifted teacher. We highly recommend him to everyone!+ Read More
Great guitar lessons
Mr. Byron has been the perfect match for both my boys! He began teaching my 10 year old a year ago. Before, Mr. Byron, my son had been through 2 other guitar teachers but neither one could get him to play. Mr. Byron was able to strike my son's interest by tapping into songs he enjoyed listening to and later bringing them to life on the guitar. As a result of Mr. Byron's great teachings, my 6 year old son was inspired to begin ukulele lessons with him. Mr. Byron is a great teacher! His passion and love for music will definitely inspire yet challange his students to more than meet their goals!
Excellent with kids!
Our son has had Byron for 2 1/2 years now and really enjoys having him as his guitar teacher. He always gives us feedback as to how he is doing and really engages our son during his lessons. We highly recommend him as a teacher in this capacity.
Knowledgeable. keeps dyl on task. Shares a great passion
Byron employs a great mixture of what the student wants and the neccessary fundamentals he knows the student will need to continue to improve and enjoy the guitar at a high level. His love for the instrument and its versatility shines through as he makes the lesson fun and inspires the student to work toward their goals. I recommend him highly and am certain he will help you enjoy the guitar at whatever level you are.
Byron is the BEST guitar teacher!
Byron was the third guitar teacher for our daughter. The first one got too busy with school; the second one married and moved. All we can say is we saved the best for last! Our daughter has learned so much in the past 2 1/2+ years, and has added electric guitar to acoustic. Byron's style is relaxed and fun but still has goals to reach. He pushes kids to try more difficult songs but lets them choose songs they love, too.
When we wanted to get our daughter an electric guitar for a gift, Byron met my husband and daughter at the store to guide the purchase toward an instrument in our price range that was well-made and would last. Not every teacher would go above and beyond like he did!
Really cannot say enough about Byron as a teacher. He is a genuinely nice guy, has taught our daughter so much, has built her confidence, has encouraged her to try new things, and arrives with a smile on time and ready to teach.
More than just guitar
What I like most about Byron is that his lessons go beyond simply teaching guitar. Byron helps his students understand music as a whole, such that they become not just better guitarists, but better musicians. I've been blessed to have him as a teacher for over seven years now, and I highly recommend him to anyone interested in becoming an excellent guitarist.
Byron is an awesome guitar teacher!
My son has been taking lessons from Byron for a couple of years and we are very happy with Byron's expertise and reliability. We highly recommend him.
Guitar lessons a highlight of the week
I have been so pleased with the lessons that Byron has provided for our two boys. He is always punctual, pleasant, and practical. He's very attuned to areas where the individual student needs some extra attention and demands an excellence in craft which is a quality desired in a music teacher. A introduction to various genres of music keeps my boys interested and motivated to improve their skills. I would highly recommend him as a teacher.
Byron is an amazing guitar teacher. I have been taking lessons from him for almost three years now. He has taught me rock, solos, Songs of my choice, scales, and now jazz. He has made me a much better guitar player. I think he is one of the best teachers around.
Will not disappoint
Byron is a joy to work with. His technical knowledge is excellent, and his professionalism and positive attitude never falter even when faced with challenging pouty pre-teens. He has a passion for music that shines through even in the simplest of lessons. He is a good man, and will eagerly share his knowledge and experience with anyone willing to learn.
A fun teacher that makes me better
Byron is a really fun teacher that also makes me a better musician. He is able to tell me complicated musical content in a way that I can understand and apply. He teaches me exactly what I need to know to be better at the styles of music I love the most.

Wonderful guitar teacher
Byron has taught my 9 year old son guitar for over a year in our home. Byron is very patient, clear and professional. He excels at providing the right inspiration and instruction to meet the unique needs of each student. I highly recommend him as a guitar teacher including young students.
Byron is intelligent and personable, and a clearly gifted musician and teacher. Though my son is usually very shy, Byron connected well with him from the first, and has a way of bringing out the best in both his personality and guitar playing. Byron helps to keep my son's interest high by integrating the lesson skills with my son's favorite music. Byron also manages the lesson time and structure with good-natured professionalism. I would recommend him to anyone, and often have.
Byron is an excellent guitarist.
Byron is an excellent guitarist and knowledgeable music teacher. I have taught piano lessons and accompanied professionally for 25 years, and was looking for someone willing to teach me a solid foundation as a beginning guitar student.
