About Brett J.

I'm a guitarist, songwriter, and producer who just relocated from New York City back to Richmond. I've been obsessed with music for as long as I can remember, and I love sharing this enthusiasm with my students. I've been teaching for 11 years, and I enjoy working with students of all ages and ability levels. In addition to studying jazz, I play and teach a variety of styles including rock, pop, country, blues, funk, r&b, and bossa. I'm patient and easy-going with my students, but I do expect them to take practicing seriously.
I recently received a master's in jazz performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Prior to that, I graduated from the University of Virginia and Maggie Walker Governor's School. These days, in addition to practicing and performing as much as possible, I am working on finishing up production on an EP of my original music.

Brett has been very patient and has given my daughter motivation to practice her guitar! Very friendly, flexible and willing to accommodate different learning styles.

Teacher's studio
I have been a student of Brett's for almost 8 years now in harmony, acoustic guitar, and most recently songwriting. His teaching was clear and articulate and I found immediate results from practicing material he presented to me in our lessons. As a beginner, I found he stuck out in always relating what he taught me to a musical context, which should be obvious but is a rare find with most teachers today. I have also seen Brett work with younger students and they all gravitate to his easy-going, friendly demeanor and outstanding talent. Brett is someone the kids (and myself) want to work for, the mystifying "it" factor that only some gifted teachers possess. Highly recommended.
