I am a composer, guitarist, arranger, engraver, and songwriter located in Brooklyn. I have taught extensively for the past ten years in a variety of settings, including teaching private guitar lessons at Saint David's School in Manhattan, teaching private composition lessons and TA'ing two electronic music courses at Yale, as well as teaching guitar and musicianship in public elementary and high schools in San Francisco and New Haven, as well as several private music schools and my own private guitar studio.
As a guitarist, I perform regularly with legendary NYC experimental groups the Glenn Branca Ensemble, Dither Quartet, and Object Collection, and freelance with groups such as the Atlanta Symphony, Ensemble Signal, and Magik*Magik Orchestra. I've played at the Barbican in London, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., on the Beijing Modern Music Festival and the Ellnora Guitar Festival, among many others. As a composer, my work has received support from the Jerome Foundation, New York State Council for the Arts, the Guitar Foundation of America, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and ASCAP, and been performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the Omaha Symphony, Dither, and Friction Quartet.
I am the co-founder of two groups: Invisible Anatomy, a composer/performer ensemble described as “sometimes haunting sometimes hilarious and consistently mesmerizing ” (I Care If You Listen) and “otherworldly and uncanny” (The Village Voice); and Marateck, “a gripping math-rock band...[that] manages to wring out everything that its guitar-bass-drums instrumentation (traditionally) has to offer, while still remaining focussed and direct” (Tone Madison).
My teachers and mentors have included Mark Stewart (Paul Simon's musical director), Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, and guitarist Jack Sanders (winner of the American Guitar Society's lifetime achievement award).
I was a TA for two undergraduate electronic music classes - Introduction to Electronic Music, and Advanced Topics in Electronic Music

What a great lesson, thanks Brendon! The attention and detail of suggestions are spot on and very useful.. ! I leave these lessons feeling like I'm in such good hands..!
My first lesson with Brendon was far beyond what I was expecting.. It was inspiring, he was extremely attentive and friendly, and clearly has a very deep knowledge of music.. I'm very excited to continue working with him.. !
Very good teacher! Informative and flexible. Great for self-motivated and curious students.
Brendon has to teach to my 8 yo boy who doesn't speak english yet. It is not easy but he does it very well. My son was glad to play guitar and to learn with Brendon.
Very effecient class. Brendon knows how to teach very well!
Nothing but good things to say about Brendon. Aside from his insane talent as a composer and musician, he was phenom with our son Max. A few thoughts below...
We knew Brendon was the right person to help our son Max on day one with TakeLessons, when we wrote to 4 or 5 potential instructors. The other folks wrote back and just said 'sure, I'm here, happy to help'. But Brendon wrote back with thoughts about the pieces Max needed to learn for his audition, a rough outline of a plan, and shared enough about himself that we knew he had truly 'heard' what we needed were looking for. That kind of thoughtfulness is unique.
Brendon is great with kids, and created instant rapport with Max over the video lessons. Brendon will always spend a little extra time than budgeted, which is appreciated. And his scheduling was flexible which always helps with us busy families. We did a few in person lessons and Max came away inspired - for classical guitar but also for music in general. Max's skills grew throughout, and he never resisted practicing; he looked forward to the lessons and the chance to talk about some guitar-related thing with Brendon.
Brendon isn't a big disciplinarian so after a few weeks I had a little chat with Max about what it means to respect your teacher, even if they seem young and cool and are on video. That's something I think parents need to monitor a little.
Recommended w/o any hesitation. If you have Brendon in mind you're headed in the right direction for sure. -MR
I have been working with Brendon for about 2 years now. He is not only incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of guitar (composition, scales, classical pieces, finger-strengthening exercises, etc.), he is also an incredibly patient and dedicated instructor who really listens to the student's needs and helps fill them. His repertoire of songs, exercises, and general guitar knowledge have helped me understand the instrument in a multitude of different ways. I have had many guitar instructors before, but never someone who was so incredibly flexible and patient and willing to help when it comes to someone who has a busy schedule who is still interested in learning a complex instrument. He's definitely the best instructor I've ever had, and I look forward to continuing to work with him for a long time.+ Read More

Brendon is a really excellent teacher who caters to the student in terms of skill level, musical interest, and time constraints. Also he's super patient and nice! I have already learned so much from him! He's terrific
I've had a great experience working with Brendon. He's been reliable, and explains things very well. He's been able to tailor the lesson plan to exactly what I need. I am much further ahead than I expected to be at this point, thanks to him.I give him the highest recommendation.+ Read More
Brendon is very knowledgeable in Music Theory. We have been working on Schenkerian analysis. He assigns helpful assignments and readings each week to guide my learning.
