Aram S is an improviser and composer who performs on saxophone, clarinets, and live electronics. He's been a member of the creative music communities in Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Copenhagen and Budapest. Along the way he’s toured throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe. His writing and playing has been documented through more than twenty albums since 2005. Starting on tenor saxophone while growing up on a small ranch in southeast Florida,S switched to alto in college where he received his bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance. Afterwards he moved to Chicago in the spring of 1999, inspired by the amount of musical activity. He quickly became involved in the city’s creative jazz scene, playing in several groups and making many recordings. In 2005, S moved to Oakland to study electroacoustic music & recording techniques at Mills College in Oakland, California. At Mills, S wrote electroacoustic music combining orchestral instruments with live processing via custom built patches in MAX/MSP. While in Oakland, S taught at the Oakland School for the Arts while playing with and writing music for jazz and chamber groups including Ton Trio II, Cylinder, the Broken Trap Ensemble, his sextet Marches, and the Oakland Active Orchestra. In 2016 he moved to Copenhagen, where he met many European musicians who he performed with in Denmark, Norway and Germany. Two years later he moved to Budapest, Hungary where he quickly became involved in the city’s creative jazz community, performing throughout the country and in nearby Slovenia & Austria. S has recently returned to Chicago, where continues to perform and teach saxophone.
