Annabel is a classicly trained violinist who gradually became a musician as she learned what it meant to be one. We all have a multitude of senses that can be tuned to become a musician: a channel for our chosen instrument. Musicians aim to cultivate talent in music as a gift to give oneself and others. They feel the freedom-- sufficient technical facility and intuitive artistry-- to express whatever voice speaks in each moment. Annabel has relearned as an experienced violinist that we do well to view playing from a biodynamic perspective. That means extending the concept of instrument beyond the violin to the body-mind. Giving attention to subtle movements and holding patterns can make hours of practice unnecessary. This is part of a joyful, freeing approach wherein more of practice becomes play as challenges become gateways to greater fluency. Annabel believes that in this way, violinists can enjoy playing to their fullest capacity at any level.
While students are encouraged to take initiative in lessons, Annabel will recommend certain essential components for developing talent. That includes regular excersizes indepent from any specific repertoire as well as gradual integration of music theory, with the aim of developing musical feeling, thinking, and intuition. She will provide material approriate to each student, while inviting them to present whatever interests them. Repertoire may span across a variety of genres including fiddle, jazz, and rock. About Annabel L.

Annabel is a lifelong violinist. She began with the Suzuki Method and then went on to train in the classics as well as fiddling, jazz, and improvisation. During the time when she was active in the music scenes of Troy and Ann Arbor, Michigan, she became a skilled and versatile player. Since then she has always kept her violin close at hand even through prolonged travel. Experienced with many kinds of groups (orchestras, quartets, duos, eclectic), she aspires to embody the flexibility necessary to play spontaneously with any arrangement. Now in Costa Rica, she is seeking to grow a community of collaborative musicians and enrich the lives of others with her knowledge of the violin.
