Singing

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
My love of singing began in my freshman year of high school, when I joined the choir. It was a life-changing experience, and inspired me to make music my career. I immediately began taking private voice lessons, and became a voice teacher myself by 2005. While in college, I was presented with many opportunities to learn and grow, both as a musician and as a teacher. I sang in several different collegiate choirs, and was nominated to be in the all-collegiate choir in 2007. I also passed yearly auditions to sing in Voices Only, Lindenwood's most advanced vocal group. During my junior and senior years at Lindenwood, I worked as the assistant director of Voices Only. This was a wonderful opportunity, and I learned so much while leading warm-ups every day, running sectionals on a weekly basis, directing the group during rehearsals and even during performances when the director was away. I currently sing in the Saint Louis Harmony Chorus, one of the top 25 women's barbershop choruses in the world. I am on the music faculty of the chorus, and am also the baritone section leader. I also sing in an award-winning barbershop quartet called Executive Sweets.

Vocal students are not required to purchase a curriculum for voice lessons, as lessons are based around the fundamentals of singing (breath support, head/chest voice, tone, and diction) and focused on each student's desired repertoire. Students will be working on two songs at any given time. The first song is entirely of the student'€™s choosing, while the other will be chosen by the student from the vast stores of generally accepted vocal repertoire. This second song can be an aria, art song, or Broadway piece, and the student may choose from a variety of languages (English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, and Latin) in which to sing. Each lesson also includes warm-ups tailored to each student to develop technique and expand range, and a short theory or ear training session. Depending on student interest, these lessons may also include work on improvisation, composing, and musical dictation.

Teaching since:
May 2004

Hi! My name is Angela, and I teach private piano, voice, and theory lessons. I love teaching, and have taught many ages (3 to 93) and ability levels (novice to advanced). I am a dependable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic teacher. I offer lessons for 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly sessions in my home studio. I do not offer bi-weekly lessons or lessons in the student's home.

My home is a split-level, with my private living area above and my music studio below. There is a waiting area just outside the music studio, as well as a half-bath specifically designated for students and parents. The studio itself contains a piano and organ, my personal music library, and additional seating for parents. There is a full-length mirror for vocal students to watch their performance skills grow, and a gumball machine for when younger students have an exceptionally good lesson.

Making music is a skill which can bring lifelong joy to the musician as well as everyone around them. While I can easily ensure that my students enjoy music-making while they are taking lessons, my ultimate goal is that students continue to want to make music throughout their entire life, even after they stop taking lessons. I firmly believe that my job as a teacher is to train my students to be independent and self-sufficient musicians. Many teachers teach by rote, playing a passage to a student and then having the student play it back. Though this method is helpful in some situations, students who are taught in this manner often find that they are only able to play the songs taught to them in lessons, and that to learn a new song they must have a teacher by their side showing them how the song goes. In my lessons, however, students are taught to learn their own music through sight-reading, ear-training, music theory, and listening to and critiquing their own playing. Over time, this allows the student more and more freedom to make music without a teacher.

I am adding a review to override my original 4 star review to a 5 star review. My husband and I have been voice and piano students of Angela for well over a year now and she makes learning music interesting, fun, and challenging. It's intimidating to learn these skills (especially singing) as an adult but she is such a good teacher that we continue to look forward to our lessons and really enjoy learning these skills. She is encouraging and an excellent coach.

My daughter has been going to Angela for 4 years now. She started at 4 years of age, and is now 8 years old. My daughter started with voice lessons, and has since also picked up piano lessons. Now my younger daughter (5 years old) also began taking piano lessons with Angela. I can't imagine another music teacher for my girls. Angela is wonderful. She is professional and every moment of music lessons is complete quality time. I highly recommend Angela as a music teacher for anyone of any ability level!

Angela is super friendly and really knows how to explain proper singing techniques in a way that makes sense. She is also great at listening to her students' needs and concerns and lets the students pick which songs they would like to work on.

Only one lesson in, but we made the right choice. Angela is very professional, very well organized, and had planned perfectly for our beginner piano lesson. She was very engaging, on just the right level, and our beginner related to her style and ease in an instant. Could not have been happier with this decision.

It's obvious from the beginning that Angela knows her subject thoroughly and knows how to teach it. She quickly assessed my level of ability and knew what I needed to work on. My singing and confidence improved greatly over just a few lessons. She had useful suggestions for practicing between lessons. My lesson was always fun and over too quickly -- 30 minutes is not enough. Next time I'll sign up for at least a 45-minute lesson.

I have only been working with Angela for a few weeks, but I love her teaching style. She is patient and very knowledgeable. Having taken lessons from other teachers, I mesh well with her more linear and directed teaching methods. I've made more progress in 5 weeks than in a year with another teacher! She also has a great sense of humor. :)

Angela is awesome! She is super patient and doesn't get frustrated when I don't understand something. I am pretty shy and timid, and she can work with that. I also really like that she takes an interest in my life outside of piano lessons, but doesn't let it take over the whole lesson (I'm a talker, so I could definitely chat for 30 minutes unless stopped). I am totally loving my lessons with her and can't wait for more!

Angela moves at a pretty good clip, which is fine with me. I appreciate that she is tailoring the lessons to suit my abilities, rather than a one-size-fits all approach. I feel like I am a part of making choices, when appropriate. At the same time, Angela is confident in respectfully voicing a different opinion, and explaining it. I'm also taking piano lessons with her and appreciate her finding occasions to combine voice and piano opportunities.

A great teacher!

I am probably Angela's oldest pupil (92) and I have seen many teachers, educators and lecturers in my lifetime, but none have equaled Angela for excellence. This young woman teaches the full time allotted to a lesson-a minimum of chit-chat. She is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each pupil and teaches each with these in mind. She is endlessly patient and encouraging, and her enthusiasm for music is contagious; it lifts the spirits of the pupils. She has a thorough academic background in music and this fund of knowledge is used actively in her teaching-pupils cannot get away with anything. Her corrective measures, however, are not harsh or punitive, but gentle and subtle.

I am very proud of Angela and what she has accomplished, and very pleased and lucky to have found her as my piano teacher.

Angela Hall Piano & Theory Lessons

Angela has a bottomless well of patience and understanding.
I've struggled with notation reading forever and can become easily overwhelmed when trying to read music. Also, playing in front of others isn't my strong suit.
That said, Angela has dealt with my issues systematically and mostly transparently. After just 6 months of lessons I'm really reading music and my ability to play in front of others has increased a great deal. Did I mention she does all that with a smile?
On top of being able to make huge improvements towards my real underlying player issues Angela's teaching methods are consistently increasing my musical knowledge and playing technique.
Also, because I have previous theory education, she's able to explain piano to me, not just in "players" terms, but, also from a theoretical view point as well.
The icing is her ability to constantly push me beyond my level of comfort, almost without me even noticing.
Ms. Hall is an all around excellent teacher.
After more than 6 months of lessons with her I have not had a single bad or questionable experience.

Knowledgeable and Fun

Working with Angela has been a very positive experience. She has a good balance of knowledge and out going personality, which makes for some very enjoyable vocal instruction lessons. In the time that she's been teaching me, she's helped to improve my knowledge of music theory, identify and break bad habits, and push my vocal limitations without risk of damaging my vocal chords. If you're looking for an instructor that really knows her stuff, and is really easy and fun to work with, I cannot recommend her enough.
