Master of Music - Music Theory and Composition

Learn how to play oboe expressively and build toward your musical goals.

Music is about self-expression, and playing with purpose. Playing expressively can be effective in creating musical ideas rather than just playing the black and white notes on the page, and I can teach you how to do this with confidence and ease. As an instructor for 20+ years, I recognize every student learns differently. My teaching method is simple. We'll start at a base level wherever you're comfortable, develop and solidify that level, and slowly and steadily work into more advanced concepts and music. I take a hands-on approach to matching my student with particular music to study that will help in their development and growth as a music student, tailoring a curriculum just for them. To prepare my students for their next big step, I use all the method books and etude studies that are nearly always asked for at auditions and for studying at colleges and universities, as well as out in the real world. I also encourage my students to listen to music actively outside of our lessons to get a better understanding of the music they are a part of or that they are studying. My lessons are relaxed and methodical throughout the learning process to ease stress and allow my students to feel more comfortable with their study regimen. It’s important to recognize that music requires practice and discipline to improve, but through a bit of dedication and effort, I've seen musical breakthroughs and have seen off some students to successful auditions at colleges and universities. These are several of my philosophies among many others that I incorporate into my teaching.

Hello! My name is Andrew and I am here to teach you essential skills and techniques for playing the oboe. I have had the privilege of studying with some of the foremost oboists in the industry at schools in California, Texas, and Ohio. I have learned a variety of methods not only of how to play and perform, but how to teach and effectively give my knowledge and experience to my students. Expressive playing and phrasing are my expertise, as just some of the many things I focus on. I have been in a variety of larger and smaller ensembles, anywhere from chamber quintets to orchestras and large wind ensembles. I have been a leader of oboe sections throughout my career. I greatly enjoy music, performing, composing, and playing. I spend much of my time working on reeds which I sell online and locally, but I also play with a local orchestra and perform in the community. With a bit of effort and practice, I can teach you how to perform music with passion and purpose, compose in a variety of styles, and teach fundamental ideas that can be used to propel you forward in your musical career. I look forward to working with you.
