Music is an art form that I have a passion for and it is my goal for each student to find their passion with music in their own way. I can provide the tools and know-how to build a foundation of playing that will be enriching for you as my student - because it was the result of your own hard work and commitment. There are many sides to music and I am happy to work with whatever a student would like to play; be it a sonata, concerto, or ensemble work and even a pop song or two! I want to make my student's experience enjoyable and worthwhile. This is a safe space for you as my student to try new things without judgment or harsh criticism. This is your opportunity to set and reach your personal goals and artistic aspirations! I have the mastery and experience of playing in a variety of highly regarded positions both academically and professionally, and as a result of my own time working with world famous musicians. Finally, I understand music as a language that few can tap into, but all can enjoy.

About Andrew G.

Hello! I am an oboist as well as music theorist and I welcome students of all ages and abilities. I have 20+ years of experience playing the oboe with a master's degree in performance and a master's degree in music theory and composition. And I have continuously performed as principal oboe for dozens of ensembles in my academic and professional career.

I'm originally from southern California and grew up studying music on the oboe, and I immediately became fascninated by this wonderful instrument. I also play the English Horn, and I am a skilled professional reedmaker and make and play on my own reeds.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from California State University: Fullerton where I held the position of principal oboe in both the CSUF Wind Symphony and the CSUF Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2012. I studied oboe and reedmaking with Dr. Larry Timm who is a former recording artist for large motion-picture companies in Hollywood. I also took private lessons with the principal oboists of the Pacific Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. In my time at CSUF, I performed in ensembles large and small, chamber groups, masterclasses, and numerous solo recitals. As a member of the Wind Symphony, I toured across Portugal in Spring 2011 and was exposed to a variety of musical styles and reedmaking techniques. And in 2012, I graduated from CSU: Fullerton with a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance.

In 2012, I auditioned and was accepted into the College of Music at the University of North Texas on scholarship and was offered the principal oboe position in both the top ensembles, including the well-recorded UNT Wind Symphony and the UNT Symphony Orchestra. I studied oboe with James Ryon, a graduate of the Juilliard School and Principal Oboe of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. I also performed regionally in a variety of venues in the DFW metroplex, including being a member of the Madera Woodwind Quintet. In 2015, I spent some time learning and performing on Baroque oboe and studied Baroque performance practice. In 2016 I received my master's degree in Instrumental Performance with a concentration in Early Music Studies.

In the same year, I was offered a graduate teaching assistant position to study at the University of Akron with Jack Harel, who holds the World Record for Fastest Playing as a soloist and is a former principal of the San Francisco Sinfonietta. While at Akron, I studied music theory and composition and had two of my own pieces of music premiered, the first a contemporary oboe solo titled Lunar Shadow, and the second a woodwind quintet. In 2017, I was appointed 2nd oboe in the Tuscarawas Philharmonic and in 2019 I received my second master's degree from the University of Akron in Music Theory and Composition.

I can perform and play in a variety of musical styles, be it classical, contemporary, electronic and even jazz.

I am honored to be the recipient of training from former students of John Mack and Robert Bloom, premiere principals of the major US orchestras and esteemed pedagogues in the double reed community. My teaching method involves critical analysis of music to understand phrasing, sound production and style.

I love the oboe in every way, and I can teach all ranges of skill. I have taught students from ages 7 and up, and I make sure my students walk away with the skills to meet their goals, feeling accomplished and with a joy and love for music.

Very satisfied with Andrew's support of my son's oboe classes. Andrew was patient and encouraging, which is exactly what my son needed. I was sorry that he moved an could no longer teach my son.
