Whether you're coming for roman numeral analysis, SATB chorales, or help analyzing short works, symphonies and preparing for tests, I have extensive knowledge of the inner workings of music. For example, I believe music contains patterns, relationships and structures. I will help you master recognition of these elements through ear-training and harmonic and rhythmic dictation. With my lessons, you can achieve successful SATB part writing and we'll work together so you leave the lesson with not just a modern understanding of theory, but a sense of accomplishment. I also teach Schenkerian analysis, 20th century techniques such as serialism and set theory. In closing, I will give you the tools to bolster you in navigating these concepts so you can understand music on a deeper level and apply your learning to real-world examples, or classroom assignments.

About Andrew G.

Hello! My name is Andrew and I am a professional oboist and music theorist. I've had a long and enriching experience playing and teaching oboe and reedmaking. Being able to educate students in their own learning pattern is my goal. The best way I would describe my teaching style is that I act as an educator as well as a mentor. My preferred teaching style is a hands-on approach to matching my student with particular music to study that will help in their development and growth as a music student. I am effectively tailoring a curriculum just for them. I work primarily with middle school and high school students, so you can be assured I have all the method books and etudes that one would come across during auditions for colleges and universities, and out in the real world. This includes orchestral excerpts, concertos, sonatas, etc. I will guide you through every step of the way with patience and encouragement.

I see music as the building block to help bolster a strong foundation for non-music learning and setting and meeting personal goals, such as time management, prioritization of tasks, and reducing stress and performance anxiety. These lessons will also help you balance a work/life schedule with time management and active engagement in your learning to make you more comfortable with your studies.

Very satisfied with Andrew's support of my son's oboe classes. Andrew was patient and encouraging, which is exactly what my son needed. I was sorry that he moved an could no longer teach my son.
