My goal is to create a positive learning environment that addresses a student's specific needs. I focus heavily on increasing a student's critical thinking skills so that they can easily problem solve during their practice sessions, increasing their ability to grow as a musician.

I have five years of teaching experience, with age groups pre-k to high school. Last year, I received my masters degree in violin performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Thanks for your consideration and I'm looking forward to working with you!

About Amanda G.

After 18 years of studying the violin and five years of experience teaching violin, I’ve realized how important it is to create a learning environment where the student knows they can achieve. I accomplish this through a combination of directing a student’s attention to things they should listen for and building a trouble-shooting ‘toolbox’. This method results in a student realizing they can fix problems and improve, ultimately leading to huge boosts in self-confidence.

In May 2019, I received my masters degree in violin performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, having studied in the studio of Professor Kevin Lawrence. It was Kevin Lawrence that showed me that I could accomplish the unimaginable on the violin with the development of critical thinking skills. In my time at UNCSA, I was also able to put his pedagogical techniques to the test and teach my own students through UNCSA's ArtistCorps program. ArtistCorps is dedicated to bringing the arts to children who attend under-resourced, Title I schools in the Winston-Salem area. I emphasized the development of critical thinking skills in my lessons and was able to see my students gain confidence in ways I never expected. It was as if someone had flipped a switch and they suddenly believed in their ability to achieve! Thanks to ArtistCorps, I have gained experience teaching between the age groups of pre-kindergarten to high school students.

My philosophy is to always try and do better than the previous day. If I teach a lesson that I feel didn’t go too well, I spend time thinking about ways I could do better for the next lesson. I hope that my students will gain this kind of growth mindset after having several lessons with me.

Thanks for taking the time to read my bio! Hopefully, this sounds like a good match for you or your child and we can start our musical journey together!

I worked with Amanda for almost a year until I had to relocate outside the area and she has been very professional and has always been flexible with schedules. As an adult learner who took basic lessons in the past, she was very patient and helpful throughout the entire learning process from holding the bow to tuning the violin. Highly recommend and would definitely continue taking classes!
