Hi, my name is Alex S. I hold a B.M from the Manhattan School of Music (Jazz Studies) and an M.M from the University of Northern Colorado (Jazz Studies). I have taught private lessons in jazz piano and general piano for over a decade. I have also taught semester-long music classes as well as masterclasses at colleges and high schools around the country. Aside from teaching private lessons, I am the jazz piano professor at Boise State University and am an active performer and composer. I have copied my website bio below if you would like to learn more! Alex S. Bio: At a young age, pianist Alex S.'s distinctly captivating style led her to move from Idaho to New York to immerse herself in New York City’s jazz scene. Her unique sound is comprised of a voice all her own which relies on nuanced intricacies in both her arrangements and improvisation paired with familiarity, whether from pop music, world music, or from jazz greats including Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner. One of her regular sidemen summarized it as “the combination of Post-Impressionistic painting, a jigsaw puzzle, childhood, and groove.” During her time in New York, she studied with some of the top jazz artists in the world and obtained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the Manhattan School of Music.   More recently, she completed her Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado as a teaching assistant and is currently on faculty at Boise State University. Throughout the last few years, she has been actively performing with the nationally touring trio SBST as well as the S. Baker Duo and has played at venues such as The Velvet Note in Atlanta, Georgia and Dazzle in Denver, Colorado. Beyond her performance career, she has had her hand at a variety of other projects including: recording three albums as leader and co-leader, composing the music for a short film, conducting and debuting an original big band arrangement at a University of Northern Colorado concert, teaching jazz ensemble classes, and presenting workshops and masterclasses across the country.

My 12 year old son loves all music in general, not just a single instrument. He has been playing piano for a while and was able to click with Alex immediately. The way she spoke WITH him ( not just to him) about All aspects was great. She works very well with my son and he is looking forward to his nExt lesson.

I felt very comfortable with her. She was very patient and gave clear instructions on what to work on for next time.

Alex is very patient and able to adapt to her students. I studied with her for a year and also got to see other students work with her and she always had a way of getting each student to accomplish their goals. I think when you look for a teacher, you really are looking for someone to teach you how to learn. So many teachers tell you something or tell you what to do but never help you develop a skillset. Alex is different in that she absolutely focuses on developing a fundamental process so that each student not only learns but knows how to learn. As a result, there is progress I can see immediately, of course, but also years down the road. If you're looking for a teacher seriously, consider someone who will make a lasting impact and will make you a better overall person— not just tell you to do something and move on. Alex is a teacher who, regardless if you pursue music, you will come out better because of her teachings. Highly recommend!
