Hello visitors! I'm a born and raised Houstonian working on my master's in geophysics at the University of Houston. I'm super new to TakeLessons so I'm still learning their interface. The last time I worked for TakeLessons was to teach a few friends some math while going to UT, but now times have changed. For the last 1+ years, I've been as a part-time tutor at Educere teaching upper level math and physics. The majority of my students were high school students, but there is no harm teaching middle school or college kids. I'm on TakeLessons because college is pretty expensive so I'm hoping this part-time work will help me pay off tuition and bills. Although I tutor because I need the money, I'm extremely passionate in math and physics. In fact, I find myself accidentally keeping students 10-20mins longer because we wanted to finish that one last question. Plus, the students are pretty easy going people so I love hanging out with you guys. In general, my tutoring works a little differently than what others do. For one, I don't like to tutor online. In-person tutoring is significantly more effective than online tutoring because there can be a lot of miscommunication over Skype. Two, I work the problems side-by-side with my students without looking over their shoulders. My work doesn't involve disciplining students but teaching them math and/or physics because I expect the students to be honest and attentive in the lessons. Lastly, I'm versatile with the majority of math and physics topics. No matter what problem the student brings to me, I answer the problem. If I can't answer it during the tutoring lesson, I bring the problem back home and work on it until I get the correct answer. Usually, this happened with my students in calculus 3 and mechanical/electromagnetic physics from University of Texas, Texas A&M, Rice and University of Alabama. This can be avoided if the student sends me their work ahead of time, but nearly 90% of my tutoring has been on-the-spot improvisation. Sometimes, I would have to teach the student entire chapters within an hour, so I'm used to the spontaneity. I mold to my student's needs. I know when to take breaks, how to communicate/get along, and when to drive hard at homework. I honestly don't like how TakeLessons requires the students to set up several appointments because the student never really knows when he/she will need me or how many times they will want to meet up with me. In my experience, most students just need a little help because they fell a little behind or they don't have the time to wonder over a single problem for hours. Sometimes need me and sometimes they only want a few tips and pointers. I'm incredibly flexible with scheduling so if you need to change your schedule up or if you would rather push/cancel that one lesson, I understand. One last thing, my classes are usually at night so I'm usually not back home until around 8-8:30 during the week days. Also, I don't work on Fridays because I believe Fridays are a weekly holiday.
