A healthy physical approach to the piano, a keen appreciation for sound, and a curious mind - these are qualities which I've been able to help cultivate in my students. You will learn how to play without tension, utilizing the body to the upmost capacity. You will learn how to create the sound you want with an instrument that can do almost anything you want it to. And all of this will be done with a constant mindset of discovery. I want to help you not only play the music you want to play but to appreciate more deeply music you already know and love. I accomplish this through a flexible method which fits the unique needs and desires of each individual student.

About John
Greetings! I am a teacher who believes in the importance of understanding you and your needs so that we can accomplish, as a team, your specific goals for learning to play the piano - whether that means playing a Beethoven sonata, playing by ear, or creating your own music! I am a classically trained pianist with a Master's degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. I have studied with some of the most famous pianists in the world today including Menahem Pressler, Gabriel Chodos and Livia Rev. I also have a lot of experience in the world outside of classical piano, which informs my teaching and enables me to offer your a much more well-rounded approach to not only the piano, but to understanding and enjoying music itself!

John is the best piano teacher I've ever had. I studied with him for about a year and a half, and my musicality and ability to play the piano improved so much. He taught me techniques with logical explanations, and musical expressions with history behind the music. His lessons made me happy to see a whole new world behind the music we'd been learning. He is a very experienced and wonderful musician and teacher. I highly recommend him!

After taking piano lessons from a family friend for several years growing up, I decided to pick piano back up in college. Thanks to John, I was able to do much more than that. We worked together for about a year and a half, and in this time John not only helped me become a better pianist than I had ever hoped, but he opened my eyes to expressive possibilities in music that I had never been exposed to. I used to think of a piece of music as nothing more than a series of notes to be played in order, at the right tempo, the right volume, etc. John helped me see that even the most simple melody contains an infinite number of possibilities. He taught me skills that allowed me to begin to harness these possibilities and to find my own sound and style. After working with John, I feel like I hear all music in a new way, and my love for music has never been greater. To sum up, John is an expert pianist and an even better teacher. I cannot recommend him highly enough to anybody, at any level, who has a desire to learn more about music and about the piano.

I have taught piano since 2012. I prefer to take beginners, and I do especially well with younger students. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

About Ben
Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. I have experience not just with teaching but also with writing, recording, and performing music in successful bands and on multiple instruments and in multiple genres. I am comfortable teaching piano, guitar, and bass guitar, ukulele, and I especially love teaching music theory. I have extensive theory training at the college level and have written and composed extensively in the classical, rock, jazz, and folk traditions. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to achieve your musical goals.

Students will progress in playing, note reading, theory, musical interpretation, and technique. The technique I teach--both for violin and piano--centers around using the body efficiently both to avoid injury and to get the best results from playing.

About Elana
Hello,

My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. My violin students have been concertmaster, principal players, and section players in orchestras such as All-County, Region I, and NY Youth Symphony.

Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. I look forward to working with you.

Although I majored in jazz trombone, I have been a proficient piano player since I was very young. My skype lesson with Sam was one of the most insightful musical experiences I've had in regards to educating myself about the craft of trombone playing. Not only is his remarkable prowess at the instrument itself apparent but his knowledge of musical harmony and overall artistry allows all of his expert advice to come full circle and become even more impactful. His teaching style was incredibly supportive and effective and with clear and concise input I feel like I can very easily implement the information he gave me into my own playing. From the nuances of trombone technique to the intricacies of complex musical harmonies and progressions, Sam is more than capable of instructing students of all ages and skill levels. I would absolutely recommend Sam to anybody who wants to study music/trombone seriously or even is just getting started and wants to build a strong foundation. I can't wait until my next online lesson!

Sam is a fabulous trombone teacher and player! In our lessons, he is really good at assessing what I can and can’t do and then building lessons to address those skills. As a teacher, he is very fun and down-to-earth while also having high standards and being willing to challenge me.

Whether you want to learn today's popular music, go back to classic songs of the past, or want to write your own music, I have the tools for you! I have many years of experience teaching both kids and adults, and my versatile professional experience means I can offer instruction in a wide range of musical styles. For traditional method book learning, I'm well-versed in both the Alfred piano method, as well as Faber & Faber, while drawing from my own upbringing as a Suzuki student. I also make sure each student learns music theory and ear training techniques in order to internalize the music on a deeper level.

About Tyler
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger, freshly transplanted to Brooklyn after seven great years in Boston, Massachusetts. My professional experience on saxophone, keyboards, clarinet, flute, and bass in many different musical styles has offered me a wide-ranging palate to teach from. For the past five years, I've worked for multiple organizations and agencies as a private lessons instructor, averaging 15-20 students at any given time and maxing out at over 30! My approach to lessons is laid back, yet goal-oriented. My main goals are to equip my students musical and instrumental fundamentals, help them discover their particular passions within music and work towards related goals, and to foster an environment rooted in fun and mutual respect.

Lessons should be a creative and fun way to challenge your abilities and encourage growth. The curriculum is always designed with custom exercises to keep your goals and musical interests at the forefront.

About Matt
Hello and welcome!

My name is Matt and my goal is to create an enjoyable, safe environment for you to learn as effectively as possible. Music is hard work but it is the most fun when you are improving and doing what you want! Having been through years of many types of music lessons, a master's program and worked in music publishing, I know that what is most important it is to have a mentor who is thoughtful and open to honest conversations about goals, needs, and interests--- someone who invests and goes the extra mile to help you succeed--- someone who inspires and challenges you. This focused, collaborative approach to education is rare but of utmost importance to my style.

I'm first and foremost a composer with interest in using these skills to encourage you to discover and achieve your goals in composition, theory, or beginn
ing piano: additionally I'm in the very beginning stages of developing these ideas into a mobile/web application to further encourage consistent learning habits outside of lessons.

I look forward to meeting with you!
