I have been struggling to learn how to play for 35 years and never could find the right instructor for "Me". I have come to the conclusion that I will never play the piano so I have given up on my dream. I felt this was a big let down in my life and I couldn't let myself down by giving up. So I started a search again for an Instructor that will be good for me. My search online took me to takelessons and I was connected with Paul.

I thought, "What do I have to lose, nothing". So I signed up and I have to say after meeting Paul and taking, now 3 lessons, I find that I finally found the instructor for me.

Paul is very attentive to my learning needs and is very accommodating in adopting his teaching style to fit my learning style. I am a slow learner, as well as, a sight learner (in other words, I have to see what one is explaining for me to understand) Paul has taken his time with me to show and explain everything to me.

Paul encourages me to ask questions and he will take the time to answer any question that I have and if I don't understand, Paul will explain it differently to me until I understand. Paul has a vast knowledge in music, Piano and other instruments which is very reassuring to me.

I know I have made the right decision to take my lessons with Paul. I have to say, I will finally be able to achieve a dream of mine that I have had for the past 35 year, and it's all thanks to Paul.

I'm lead vocalist, lead guitarist & songwriter for a well-known touring rock band with a worldwide fan base and over 3 million youtube views. I graduated from New York University with Bachelor's of Music in Jazz guitar & trained with some of the most well-known and respected vocal coaches in the world. About Asuka
I started my musical training as a pianist at YAMAHA institute at age 4 in Japan. I was selected to enter perfect pitch class. It was designated for students who have perfect pitch and potentials to be professional musicians.

I'm almost afraid to write this review lest Asuka's schedule gets totally filled with new students:) I started lessons with Asuka Nov 22 as a beginner and by January 15 the notes I could sing increased by an octave.

My high C/C6 came by early December, a couple of weeks after starting with Asuka. Some of this is my voice type, but I believe anyone who works with Asuka will see improvement.

I am taking lessons with a well-regarded pop teacher from the same time period and I've developed almost entirely from Asuka's lessons vs the other teacher, and quickly too with consistent practice. What Asuka teachers carries over to non-classical singing also.

Asuka is not rigid in her approach, thankfully, and she is so nice about the million things beginner singers can correct. I don't feel embarassed singing in front of her because she is non-judgmental.

I did some online lessons when she was traveling, and I got just as much out of them so even if I leave New York I will continue working with her.

I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

Regardless of the age or experience that a student brings, my goal is to help make piano playing personally enriching and musically satisfying.

Here are the qualities I think you should look for in a teacher and the ways in which I think I offer them.

MUSICALITY
A teacher should have an ear for what
makes music colorful and beautiful. I believe that the goal of musicians should be to attune our inner ears to the music behind the notes that sit on a page before us and then let that music flow through us. We all hear different qualities in the notes, but as long as we honestly try to get inside the notes before we touch our instrument, we can all make beautiful music.

TECHNIQUE
Once we have an idea of the way we want the music to sound, we need technique to produce those sounds. Early in my training, I experienced discomfort from the poor way in which I was playing. As a result, I had to retrain myself completely. I was fortunate enough to find three teachers of the Taubman Approach who helped me to understand the connections between playing in a coordinated way and playing beautifully. As a result of having made many mistakes myself and then overcoming them, I have developed the ability to see what is holding back my students and to help them find better ways of approaching the piano.

MATERIALS
The best music for students is the music that motivates them to practice. That said, at certain times, I think some pieces will help a student get to the next level, and others will only tie the student in knots. I have taught a lot of repertoire in a variety of styles. I can give students at any level music that is appropriate for them. I am also always eager to work on music that my students bring me.

To give students skills that directly apply to their playing, I also incorporate theory, ear training, sight reading, and scales into lessons.

INSTRUMENT
Although I have no qualms about teaching students who have electric keyboards, acoustic instruments give better aural feedback to pianists about the health of their technique. At least once a week I make sure my students get to play on an instrument that responds to their efforts with a beautiful sound: either my own 1913 Steinway B, or one of a variety of good grand pianos at the midtown studio where I teach.

PRACTICE METHODS
Students can expect to learn a lot in their lessons, but lessons usually only happen once a week. The quality and quantity of the student’s practice the rest of the week is critical. At each point in the process of learning a piece, there are different practice methods that help a pianist get to the next step. I think I can see where students are in the learning process and can guide their practice so that their time spent at home is optimized.

PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE
Many students enjoy playing music for themselves, but when they are asked to play for others, the joy of the experience turns into fear of embarrassment. There is no quick and easy solution to performance anxiety, but having worked through it in hundreds of performances, I can say there are certainly ways to reduce it and even make performing joyful. Understanding that playing for others is an experience of sharing, not “impressing,” and practicing in a way that helps one to see, hear, and feel the music the instant before one plays it are at the core of my method.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
I teach children and adult students. I do not force anyone to perform, though I encourage it. I am a member of two associations of independent piano teachers that sponsor recitals and competitions for my young students. My adult students and I usually get together at my apartment twice a year for a piano-food-fest.

FLEXIBILITY
Ultimately, there is no single way to teach all students. Students come to me with different degrees of musical training, physical awareness and dexterity, musical tastes, discipline, and patience. It is my job to figure out what will light each student’s fire and help them to practice through their challenges so that they can enjoy the beautiful and all-consuming experience of making music.

I had a great experience taking piano lessons from David. After several years away from the piano, I wasn't entirely sure where to start. David took me back to the beginning and focused on fundamentals and technique. Not only did this improve my playing, but it also helped me develop awareness of areas that I could work on when I practiced. I found David to be a wonderful teacher who teaches a good balance of technique and artistry, and I would take lessons with him again.

Lessons with David were my favorite time of the week during college. He worked on both basic techniques and finer details and nuances, which made the lessons very creatively satisfying. As a student, I hold him in the highest regard. If you haven't signed up for a lesson, you're missing out!

I always wanted to learn how to play the piano and it wasn't until the age of 29 that I decided that there was no better time than now to start taking lessons. As a beginner, I am so thankful to have David as my teacher. He stressed the importance of technique even though he knows that I just really want to learn how to play so I could show off at a dinner party. Without this, I wouldn't have progressed as quickly as I have. He is incredibly patient, which is what I like most about him as a teacher. Given that I started with David as a true beginner, he had to go over the same things repeatedly, for months on end, and he was never once impatient. He also thinks about his students outside of his lessons and that speaks volumes. I only like certain types of music and am quite stubborn about only playing what I like. He not only understands this but will send me links to songs and brings pieces of music to our lesson because I often have difficulty finding pieces that I like or that are the right fit for my skill level.

If it weren't for David's steadfast positivity, his kindness and his genuine desire to see me grow and learn as a piano player, I would not still be taking lessons from him three plus years later. Luckily for me, that is not the case and I look forward to having many more lessons with him. I highly recommend David as a teacher!

I received my Bachelors from UMASS Amherst in trumpet performance and music education. As a jazz trumpet player, I am able to teach ear training, how to create lines and understand harmony, as well as the physical demands of range and articulation.

I am also able to teach piano, I have 4 years of classical piano experience. In addition to my personal studies and teaching experiences. I have taught piano to a range of age groups as well (5-25). Based on skill level, I use certain method books to include scales, chords, reading music, rhythm, and basic musicianship skills.

Alex is a great teacher! I took private lessons with Alex through my university for a semester, and I am thankful that I did. She helped me immensely with my form, and I also learned a great deal about jazz and jazz theory that I can use again in the future. I would definitely recommend Alex as a teacher!

I was an older student but beginner trumpet player when I first started taking lessons from Alex. I didn't have much of a musical background but her clear passion about the trumpet, and her enthusiasm, patience and encouragement as a teacher made me a fan of the trumpet as well. Her lessons were varied and tailored to fit my experience level and individual playing style which kept them interesting. By introducing different and creative ways to work on technique Alex continued to make me a better player. I would highly recommend her.
