Private Piano Teacher

In our lessons, beginning students will learn to read music, play their favorite pieces, how to do warm ups and learn basic skills. I use sheet music and introductory books in my classes and assign homework for their daily practice. After 3 months, each student will move to the next level and continue learning more advanced skills. More advanced students will learn how to understand and compose music, put expression into the pieces they play and improve their current skills.

About Lena

I have been playing piano since I was a young child and have always had a passion for music. I apprenticed in China under a master piano teacher for 15 years and then immediately started performing in many different venues. 18 years ago, I started teaching piano and have enjoyed sharing my love of music with others. I am very patient with students and am very open to the type of music they would like to play. From pop music to classical, beginning to advanced, I am well versed. If there is a specific piece you want to play, I can fit it to your level. In my lessons, I try to make each experience meaningful and joyful.
I am also available giving personalized lessons online nationwide. Looking forward to meeting you and sharing the joy of music in person and online.

I especially emphasize in basic skills, such as recognizing the notes, reading the notes, understanding the meanings of the dynamics, and expressing oneself through each individual piece. Moreover, the basic performance skills are also occupied very heavily in each lesson, such as scales, triads in single notes and octaves, in slower speed and gradually into faster speed, and of course, different levels of etudes to build a strong base for each student to achieve his/her beautiful performance.

Private Piano Teacher

Hi! Welcome to my TakeLessons page, where I provide information about my background and teaching services.

I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. My piano and voice students include children, working professionals, performing artists, and seniors. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and with private instructors focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e.Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk). Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) and practices from Linklater, Alexander, Williamson movement, and Art of Practicing techniques are incorporated into my music instruction.

30 minute-lessons are available for children aged 5-6 only while 60-minute lessons are available for students above the age of 6. Prospective students may sign up to take a trial lesson with me at first to ...

About Nikole

Hi! I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about how I can help you as a teacher.

What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,

artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***
Acting: Meisner Acting; Theater Acting; Shakespearean Acting
Music: Classical Piano; Contemporary R&B & Pop Piano; Singing; Theory; Playing Whie Singing; Songwriting

***Pricing***

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. I cannot express enough how much fun I had...no pressure Nikole if you read this...lol

Private Piano Teacher

I've been teaching piano since 2005. I'm a licensed music teacher as well as a board-certified music therapist. I play mostly classical music, but I have experience playing other styles as well. I was awarded "2010 Outstanding Classical Performer" as a graduating music education major from William Paterson University. I want piano lessons to be enjoyable for my students. It's important that I expose my students to different styles of music, but I won't FORCE anyone to play anything that they absolutely don't want to. That's not fun for anyone... I incorporate music theory, technique, and musical interpretation into my lessons. I teach all ages and abilities, including children/adults with developmental disabilities and intellectual delays.

About Chris

I am a licensed music teacher and board-certified music therapist. I began teaching private piano lessons in 2005 during my undergraduate degree. I attended William Paterson University and received a degree in music education. Upon graduating, I received the William Paterson University 2010 Outstanding Classical Performer award. In 2017 I earned an M.A. in music therapy from Montclair State University, where I was awarded the David Ott Scholarship for Outstanding Music Therapy Intern. Learning music therapy has given me deeper insight into my teaching. My favorite part of music is the learning process. I enjoy performing music, but I personally get more out of learning it. Teaching allows me to be involved in the learning process with other people. I can assess a student's abilities and develop plans and materials that address his or her

musical needs. A deep understanding of music and the learning process guides me during my lessons, and I enjoy guiding students through their musical struggles and victories. In addition to classical piano, I also sing, play upright bass, and guitar. Most of my students are piano students, but I also teach guitar and bass.

*** Lesson Details ***
Since each person is different, my lessons are tailored to the individual. I don't have set lesson plans that all my students adhere to. The lessons are designed to fulfill each individual student's unique needs. My specialty is in classical music, so my students learn how to read sheet music. I also provide a solid foundation in music theory, piano technique, and interpretation. I'm laid back and easy to get along with, but I do expect my students to practice. I see my role as a musical guide. That means that I can help students who want to learn, but I can't make anyone learn music. The more you put into music, the more you get out of it. When my students take my advice during the lessons and practice at home, they progress quite quickly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide music books, staff paper, and pencils. I expect students to have an instrument of decent quality to have a lesson on.

*** Specialties ***
I'm primarily a classical pianist with experience playing in a variety of settings. I’ve played in rock bands, I've done musicals, and I played upright bass in a folk/jazz band. I have an in depth understanding of music theory and moderate understanding of jazz harmony.
I don't adhere to any one specific teaching method. I find that since every individual is unique, individualized teaching approaches are necessary to suit a student's personal needs.

I've studied classical, jazz and rock piano with the finest teachers in the world, and bring that perspective and experience to each lesson. Learning music should be FUN, which is emphasized particularly with younger students. What do YOU want to be able to do on the piano? I can help get you there!

About Steven

Hailing from New York City, Steven W. has been involved in the performing arts his entire life, which began as he received his training from a number prestigious arts institutions...Julliard (where he studied piano), New York University (where he studied music education), and the Katie Agresta Vocal Studio (whose other students include Sting, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lenox and many more, including the casts of numerous Broadway shows).

Steven is currently an indie rock solo singer/musician/producer with a number of albums in release (on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and more); recently spent two months as NY's #1 indie artist on Reverbnation's charts, and continues to perform all over the country. Having performed on small cabaret stages fo

Steven was great with my 8 year old daughter. He got her excited about learning guitar, so much so that her 6 year old brother begged us to take lessons as well. He was also very responsive to my questions and made some very helpful suggestions about how to enhance the experience for her. We were so sad that he moved away!

Private Piano Teacher

I have studied the piano for fifteen years. I have studied and taught in multiple styles as well. In my lessons, I would teach the basics of playing the piano, reading and understanding sheet music, and the fundamentals of music theory. We can cover classical piano styles along with jazz or rock and roll.

My teaching philosophy is that a teacher is just the guide. They must ensure that the student reaches their destination of their own accord and desires.

About Gillian

Hello! My name is Gillian and I recently graduated from the Crane School of Music with a degree in Music Business and Piano. I have studied piano classically for fifteen years, as well as the cello, banjo, mandolin, guitar, ukulele, and drums. I also study jazz, folk, rock, and play and sing in a band.

I have taught piano, cello, and banjo to students of all ages. I also have studied music theory for fifteen years. Please contact me and we can schedule a lesson!

In my teaching philosophy, I always teach students to understand the music better throughout the historical concepts. To let them enhance their understanding of the connection between music and life. I also stress that to be a good musician or artist, you have to learn how to be a good human being first. Because, people’s personality or character could reflect in their music as always. 1. To train the basic fundamental techniques 2. To learn the different style of the music throughout Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern music. 3. To train the performance mode 4. To learn how to "practice"

How to Play Beethoven’s "Fur Elise": One Teacher's Tips

By Suzy S.

As a musician, one of the best parts of playing music is adding your own spin to the notes and markings on the page. Here, Seattle teacher Amber A. explains her interpretation of Beethoven’s "Fur Elise", an ever-popular piece for piano students: Fur Elise, one of the most beloved piano pieces by Beethoven is often a favorite of many piano students. There are a few different performances of this piano music available on the Internet. My favorite performance is the one played by Ivo Pogorelich. …
