About Mayumi
American jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker said, Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. This sentiment shaped my views on music and its performance. One of my great pleasures in life is sharing an appreciation of music.

I had always been a part of music. My father played trumpet, my mother could play guitar and carry a tune. They believed music was an important part of life so they started me on piano at 5 years old. And I've been playing that ever since. I started learning to sing in my middle school chorus when I was 11 years old. I really liked it and I liked it more when I would sing my mother and father's favorite songs and see them smile. So I listened to a lot of singers and vocalists that they liked and learned by emulating them and apply
ing what I was learning in chorus. My piano lessons helped grasp the theory behind music and gave me a good ear for pitches.

I studied voice at the University of Maryland College Park School of Music. In their chorus I had the pleasure of learning and performing many wonderful pieces such as Verdi's Requiem and St. Matthew's Passion. During that time I had chance of playing with the University Jazz Band as both their pianist and as their jazz singer. I even arranged my own version of Too Darn Hot by Cole Porter that was performed by the band in 2007.

I also work a lot with musical theatre. I've been in a number of shows in Maryland including Rent and Hairspray, and Into the Woods. I also free lance as a music director in the area. I've been a music director for 10 years and I love every minute of it. My music director credits include Children of Eden, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Annie, Grease, My Fair Lady, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, And the World Goes Round, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Wizard of Oz, Jekyll & Hyde for which I was nominated for Outstanding Musical Direction in 2011 and Ragtime for which I was named one of the "Best of 2013: Favorite Musical Direction" by DC Metro Arts and won WATCH Award for Outstanding Musical Direction.

I believe that to get as good as you want to be, of course you have to work at it, but there's no reason that you can't enjoy learning it.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to be able to teach you soon.
Mayumi G.

*** Lesson Details ***
Practice makes perfunk. This is a saying that was always hanging on my band teacher's door in high school. It was a reminder that it requires work to get something right, but you need to take breaks and relax a bit too. That's how I feel about teaching in general. Constantly working and being worried about getting it just right can lead to bad habits. So I make sure that the lesson is balanced between a relaxed atmosphere and an effective working environment.

I can teach a variety of styles. But I like to always make sure that the fundamentals of singing are solid regardless of whether you want to sing classical or jazz or pop. So I go into:
Proper techniques for breathing
Creating good tonal sounds
Diction
learning to sing like a musician-it is easy to forget that the vocal cords are another style of instrument

I believe that singers have a greater advantage if they are able to read music and understand theory. I believe that it makes learning music by oneself much easier as well. So I also have the option to go into basic music theory (i.e. reading music notation and rhythms) to advance music theory(i.e. roman numeral analysis, ear training, harmonic progression) if you choose to do so.

For intro to piano, I follow the same structure as beginning singers and also start with the fundamental basics that will help lead into whatever style you wish to play:
How to read music
Understanding basic music theory
how to play what you read
Finger strengthening

For both piano and singing: After some basic training, I start to give a variety of different style songs to work with. I do encourage student to bring songs they want to learn and tailor lessons around that particular song and style. I like them to learn 2 songs per lesson increasing to 3 or 4 depending on the pace of the student and the amount of workload they feel they are able to handle.

I do believe that listening to music is part of the learning process so every few weeks or so I like to give the student 1 or 2 YouTube clips I found and have them watch it then come in the next week and we discuss the video both good and bad and what they can learn from it.

As they progress the songs get more difficult and we start really honing in on the techniques of the production of sound as well as performance aesthetics, as in how to create a presence on stage, how to project the sound more, overall how to give a good performance.

Some of my past students would use the lesson time to learn about auditioning for musicals and stage productions. If the student has any such desire all they have to do is ask and I will set aside time to work on how to audition for shows and what most music directors look for when they hear you sing. For those who don'€™t, I like to give the option to give a recital if the student feels comfortable to do so. It would be held in a local studio, very casual affair just to give the student that experience of music as a performing art.

Note: I do teach at my home. I do have pets, a dog and a cat. If this is an issue, I can also travel to the student home.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with keyboard and office equipment. Seating for parents.

**She has a cat, and a mid size dog**

*** Travel Equipment ***
Teaching piano: I own a weighted keyboard suitable for instruction.
Teaching voice: I can accompany the student as they sing

*** Specialties ***
In piano I tend to teach classical, but I do move away from that after they've grasped the basic technique and theory to how to sight read and improvise, even play by ear.

In voice, I start with basic classical technique and after they've grasped the fundamentals of good vocal production, branch out into different styles of music from straight classical/opera to Broadway to jazz to pop and r&b.

Never before have I had a music teacher who was so adaptive in his/her teaching method. I have had previous music instruction, but had some theory gaps in that needed to be filled. Mayumi assessed my knowledge level and got me right into what I needed to learn. She is also an expert at bringing more commonly known terms and musical pieces in which to tie the lesson to real world musical situations that her student might be more familiar with. Very much looking forward to future lessons with her!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED INSTRUCTOR ^_^

We are lucky to have found her!!!

Around a year ago, my daughter decided she wanted to learn to play the guitar! Thanks to Google, we ran into TakeLessons.
Nicole was recommended to us. After reading about her we were quite impressed!
Right after the first lesson and to my surprise, my (very shy) daughter had a great 1st experience with Nicole.
Nicole is a professional in her field AND also in handling kids and knowing how to help them overcome their shyness. She brings out the best in my daughter and also encourages her to sing even write her own notes!
I would highly recommend Nicole. She is truly talented and the greatest teacher!!!

I have taught and coached beginners and professional students. Private and Master classes.
By signing up with me, you'll learn a great deal of interpretation skills. There are 7 skills that will prepare you for not only acting, but speaking, and singing as a whole.
Currently, I am a professional singer performing throughout the year.

About Jackson
Welcome! It pleases me to welcome you as a valued student. My job as your instructor/coach is to ensure that my students get the best knowledge and skills. I teach the following lessons:* Voice lessons * English * Spanish * Public Speaking * Piano for beginners and revisiting...

I advocate a dynamic variety of approaches to your learning styles and trends. My interest is in the study of voice production; functionality, style/approach, health, and stage presence and as a result, my students are empowered with useful tools to reach their goals, confront and overcome common oppositions.

I am a PROCESS teacher. Everything in life is a process. Therefore, as a PROCESS teacher, I believe in beginning every first lesson with all of the information (I plan to teach) as a preview. Immediately (upon the next lesson) follo
wed by my teaching methods:

My teaching methods fall into these four categories: (D.A.D.E.)
• Discovery- Gathering relevant and resourceful information of voice functionality.
• Application- Putting technical skills to use and knowledge of when to use them.
• Development- Process learning- Changes cause/effects and as a result, progress, production, and promise. “Trust the process.”
• Execute- To bring forth, carry out, and perform!

Process teaching and learning is a specific teaching style that not only empowers the students to feel confident about their craft, it also gives the students useful skills that can be applied to REAL "time-life" scenarios. This reinforcement confirms that the students have indeed learned what they've hired me for and more.

By signing up for voice lessons with Jackson, you will become a V.I.P. member. What is a VIP member? V.I.P. members have the inside opportunities to learn “singer secrets!” (Vowels, Interpretations and Pept-talk).
• Vowels- Two different approaches: Spoken and Sung
• Interpretation- A stylistic approach that best explains or makes sense of. Your explanation for your creativeness.
• P.E.P.T.-Talk (Details in your lesson)

Note:
1. The most important thing for singers/musicians/language students is that they train their ears. Why? Because 90% of what you'll learn is by what you recall from hearing/listening.
2. ENVIRONMENT- is key to your learning. It's important for you to surround yourself around the very things that you're learning.

Once you sign up, you’ll receive a questionnaire. The information you provide is vital because it shapes and designs your learning curriculum.

Spanish:
Countries visited; Mexico and Peru.
I can guarantee that within a few months you'll feel confident and sure that you're conversation- ready to Speak Spanish. Therefore, if you're preparing a trip to a Spanish speaking country, you’ll find Peruvian Castellano pronunciation straightforward and as good as any other, with few of the dropped letters or peculiarities found in some other countries.

English (As a second language)
I enjoy helping others learn the complexities of the English language. English is indeed a hard tongue to grasp however; it’s not difficult once you understand its secrets. (Phonetic learning)

I loved Jackson so much. He helped me understand completely new concepts and helped me learn things that will help me in my singing career. He takes a completely original approach to teaching and singing theory, and it really improves how you perform. I would definitely recommend him to someone who is comfortable with their singing voice, but wants to take it to the next level. But I'm sure he is great with everyone!

You choose from either a 30 minute or 60 minute lesson. 30 minutes gets you warm-ups to improve range and breath,1 song worked through, sheet music, and a practice CD for you to use between lessons. 60 min lessons is similar, but with 2-3 songs worked through each lesson.

About Acacia
I have been a performer for 15 years for places such as Disneyland, Brigham Young University, Olympic College, as well as a featured soloist for several church congregations and community venues. I currently direct a volunteer community choir in Montgomery Village, MD. I have an Associates degree in music, but have been studying and mentoring in private voice since age 12, and piano since age 8. I specialize in classical and musical theater voice, but am comfortable teaching jazz and pop as well, if desired.

I am an enthusiastic, funny, adaptive yet demanding teacher. In each lesson, I adapt my teaching method according to the special requests and levels of my students, as well as their expectations and the daily conditions. I usually work with my students to decide together which is the best repertory for his/her voice and plan together the learning program. I will create an stress-free and trust environment to help my study progress in his/her work.

About Pierre-Olivier
Pierre-Olivier graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Mons (Belgium) and the Departmental Conservatory of Valenciennes (France) under the supervision of the prominent French lyric signing professor Daniel Ottevaere. Today, he is working with the famous tenor Daniel Galvez Vallejo. Over the past 10 years, Pierre-Olivier, as a professional signer, has performed in opera, musical, jazz and oratorio in many European cities, including Paris, Versailles, Toulouse, Reims, Lille, Bruxelles, Barcelona, Sevilla, Berlin, Bucharest, etc. Outside Europe, he has also performed in Moscow, Jerusalem, and Santiago de Chile.

Pierre-Olivier has performed together with many famous singers such as Bjork, Michel Fugain, Steve Zegree (Gold Company), Greta De Reyghere, Maria Cristina Kiehr, Herve Niquet (Festival d'Ambronay - France), Jean-Claude Malgoire (
Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing - France)...

In addition to performance, Pierre-Oliiver has also worked as a singing teacher at the Conservatory and the RKM rock school of Namur (Belgium). For about 8 years, he has been offering private singing lessons to students at different levels and designing individualized classes to help students achieve their objectives. He coached regularly professional and non-professional singing groups and choirs, including youth choirs. He has given different master classes in Belgium, France and Chile.

Pierre-Olivier has recently moved to Washington DC from Europe to look for new challenges and opportunities for improving his professional career.

I am an enthusiastic, fun, adaptive yet demanding teacher. In each lesson, I adapt my teaching method according to the special requests and levels of my students, as well as their expectations and the daily conditions. I usually work with each student to decide together which is the best repertory for his/her voice and plan together the learning program. I will create a stress-free and trust environment to help my student progress in his/her work. Together with the students, we will develop a strong technique but always with musicality!

For beginners, we will be mainly focusing on the basics of vocal techniques, e.g. relaxation, breath, voice correctness and stability and the interpretation of selected songs.

For intermediate and advanced students, we will mainly concentrate on musicianship and specific technical corrections related to their voices. I am opening to do interpretation only for people who prepare shows or auditions.

I accept students of any age and level, but students must have motivations… For young students, I try to communicate regularly with their parents to explain the work we have done in the class and the home work which could be interesting for the students to do. Singing lessons are a funny and creative way to discover the true artist that is hidden within each person, so let's get started!!

I only got to have courses with Pierre-Olivier for three months because he had to move to the USA, but these three months were the most productive for me.
I am student at a conservatory in Belgium and have a full training there but I found Pierre-Olivier's courses very (dare I say even more) interesting and complete.
I made a lot of progress during the 3 months I spent being his student: my technique improved a lot, and I learned so much about interpretation.
Pierre-Olivier has a vast general knowledge which is very pleasant as he can help you understand and analyse your score thoroughly. He not only teaches classical music but is open to a great deal of styles and I had the chance to explore the genres a bit more and exploit my voice.
I was really sad to see him leave because it is so hard to find a good teacher (trust me I had plenty) and hope he'll come back to Belgium
I am looking forward to seeing him again during one of his summer camps back in Europe.

Pierre-Olivier is a really great teacher. If you want to progress both in the expressions/emotions you put in your songs and in vocal technique, don't hesitate ! He always tries to find the best way for the student to achieve the goal during an exercise. Even if it takes several lessons, he does not give up. I have made a lot of progresses within a year of lessons with him in Belgium and I already miss it ! Pierre-Olivier is also very nice and we had great talks between some exercices. The time ran so fast when I was taking the lessons and it was a pleasure to take them. Even when I was tired before going to his place, I think I was always in a good mood going back home. You can choose the type of song you want to sing, it doesn't matter if it's classical or nowadays music. If you want to have fun and make progresses, just go take lessons with him, you won't regret it ! Noémie

Looking for someone a bit younger and more laid-back to teach your child, with the skills and techniques for a fully-fledged music educator? You got the whole package right here! I have been in private voice lessons, top choirs, and the head of any singing role I've been put into for 7 years. I take pride in my singing ability although it is more classically trained, I meld these classical techniques to match pop genres. Have you ever wondered how Sam Smith can hit those notes without going into full falsetto? I can teach you. I can also teach piano, guitar, and ukelele to accompany yourself.

About Rallen
I work well with kids and adults alike. I've had several family members ask me to teach them a thing or two on guitar or ukelele. For the really enthusiastic ones, they've gone on to become a church director or their band section leader. I have no flashy accolades or labels like being a professional recording artist, however, I am pursuing a degree for Music Education. Performing is not what I'd like to do all my life, it's teaching. But, for me to be able to teach, I need to be able to pay for college. At the moment, I don't have the income to immediately start at UMD.

You would be helping me out immensely and I will do my absolute best to help you learn some new chords or sing a riff or two. Thank you for reading this all the way through. Let's get started!

I am a professor of a university in China. About 4 years ago, my daughter was a student of first grade in a junior school. At that time ,my daughter's English was not good, especially her pronunciation. I was very worry about it. I came to know Toni through some people of a English Corner, and asked her to help me and my daughter. That was the begin of the story of teacher Toni and my family. My daughter went to Toni's home almost every Sunday afternoon. Toni is a very good teacher, and very kind, very Patient to my daughter. Toni improved my daughter's English very quickly, and at same time make her like to learn it. My daughter like Toni very much, and every week had a very pleasant and interesting conversation. Now, my daughter is a student in a foreign language senior school ,and was be voted as a monitor. I am so glad to have met Toni, and helped us. Thanks a lot for Toni's excellent work.
