Learn ear training from a guitarists perspective! I can work with you to learn your favorite songs by ear!
Intermediate/advanced: we can delve into formal ear training lessons tailored to your needs (hearing chords, intervals, modes)
I help students make the guitar a part of their life, teaching them to play with individuality, creativity, and proper technique.
***for DC In-home students, minimum lesson time must be 60 minutes.***
Taught privately in the Washington DC area for 3 years before moving to NYC to earn my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music majoring in Jazz Guitar. I have accumulated more than 10 years of experience teaching the guitar. I gigged regularly in the DMV and NYC areas and have been doing a lot of shows, private parties, receptions, weddings, and business events. i have made recordings in studios and I am very musically active. I am extremely passionate, and I live to play, learn, and of course teach the guitar.
*** Lesson Details and Teaching Philosophy *** I love playing guitar and YOU will too!
The guitar is a fantastic instrument
and is so much fun to play. I incorporate musical fun into my lesson as much as I can because I want students to learn how to "play" music not "work" music. I have learned from many great musicians that music is driven by passion and should be enjoyable to the performer and this is felt by the audience. Teaching and learning are similar. I enjoy teaching so much and my students always have a smile on their face after the lesson.
Play the music YOU love!
I have learned in my experience that students show the most growth and progress while learning material that they are interested in. I have been trained to be able to play almost any tune I hear, so I can teach my students how to play their favorite tunes exactly how they hear them!
This means that lessons are customized and fine-tuned for every student!
Slow and steady WINS the race!
Learning music is not a race, but this lesson is true when learning music. I am able to work with students to help them improve by identifying and isolating problems in their playing. I can create simple exercises for the student to slowly and surely become closer to the guitarist they wish to be.
I am very flexible and prioritize the students need over everything else. But with everything I teach, I am able to relate back to theory. I show students how to practice effectively to build their chops. And I of course I can instruct the students how to read and write music, with proper technique. I also have an educated background with Theory and Ear Training, all of which I pass on to all my students.
I care very much about my students and love to see them excel!
*** Studio Equipment *** music studio in basement; amps; guitars (acoustic & electric); cables, music stands, sheet music

Marvin is an excellent instructor who works with your skill level and customizes teaching accordingly. He also gives homework to your range and tips depending on your schedule. Goal is to have fun, learn, and one of your favorite songs.

Marvin has been a wonderful instructor. Patient yet sets high expectations for us, which pushes us to meet those expectations. In just a few lessons I can already see a lot of improvement. He's professional and reliable, and a pleasure to work with. We've very much enjoyed taking lessons with him.

Marvin has taught guitar to my 2 sons for 4 years. Marvin is very easy going and has a relaxed and fun approach to teaching. My boys enjoy learning from Marvin. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a guitar teacher.
Sight-singing, solfege, assistance in preparing for your community or church choir rehearsals
Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."
*** Lesson Details *** Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along
In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.
Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!
*** Studio Equipment *** lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.
I had a great first lesson with Jessica. The lesson took place in a comfortable studio in her house. We discussed my goals and then reviewed where I am currently. She paid carefully attention to my body position with the bow and had several great suggestions on exercises to improve it. I'm already looking forward to the next lesson.

Jessica is very nice!

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.

He has opened for major national acts like Journey, Maroon 5, Toby Keith, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Thrice, Story of the Year, The Bouncing Souls, Eric Hutchinson, Virginia Coalition and Graham Colton. is students generally range anywhere from 4-70+ years old and come from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of proficiency, from basic beginners to advanced. Some of his students have also gone on to pursue careers in music, others have just learned as a hobby, and some have been somewhere in between the two. All are welcome!
*** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in living room with couches, chairs, cables/amps, as well as extra guitars (acoustic and electric) and a bass guitar, if needed.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide amps and stands, etc if needs be. However, if they are already provided for the student's sake/in terms of the student (i.e. I'll bring the equipment needed for myself), this would be ideal.
*** Specialties *** Pop, rock, jazz, blues, classical, metal and funk.
I had to switch the lesson to in-home roughly 3 hours before the scheduled lesson. David was great and accommodating. He gave me a crash course on scales, which I didn't know anything about, and explained them so that I actually started to understand.
March 10, 2017
My first lesson with David was excellent! He is very patient and knowledgeable. I now have extremely high expectations for learning to play the guitar. I highly recommend him. He gave me a thorough explanation about how guitars are made made, the parts, we tuned the guitar and I am ready to groove!

Feeling very confidant with my choice in instructor!
Consists of learning to sight read, hearing intervals, melodic dictation, rhythmic dictation, and harmonic dictation. Students will learn to hear melodies, harmonies, chords, and rhythms then write them down without the help of the piano. Students will be able to read music without the help of any musical instrument. Specially helpful for those students hoping to go to college for music as it is a required class in order to graduate.
My name is Jennifer. I got my degree in vocal performance and minored in Jazz. I began voice lessons myself when I was eight. I am a mezzo soprano, and can teach both female and male voices. I have performed in several opera productions including but not limited to The Marriage of Figaro, Dido and Aeneus, Tenderland, and Hand of Bridge. I have worked and performed in masterworks by Brahms, Chopin, Mozart to name a few. I studied in French, English, Spanish, Italian, and German. I studied diction, ear training, piano, music history, pedagogy, and music theory. I have also performed with artists such as New York Voices, Bobby Mcferrin and Kurt Elling. I was blessed with many learning opportunities to grow in my passion and I would love to pass that knowledge and passion to anyone who wants to learn.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons are de
signed around the needs of each student. The first lessons is always spent testing range, knowledge and abilities already known by the student. Then the student weighs in on what kind of music they would like to learn and what they hope to gain from the lessons. Theory and ear training are incorporated into the lessons. We work on breathing, technique and style. Generally we start with English or Italian. We work on vocal performance from a classical standpoint but Jazz and Broadway can also be taught if desired by the student. Scales and exercises are given each week to be worked on until the next lesson. A recording device is encouraged if the student cannot play the piano. Also, a voice note book to take notes during the lesson to be used during practice during the week.
Omg seriously best vocal teacher ever!!! After my first lesson I had already started seeing improvements!! If you want to strengthen your vocals, Ms. Jenn is definitely the person for you!! Absolutely love going to lessons! I will not be stopping anytime soon!
August 2, 2019

May 23, 2019
Hannah is really enjoying her lessons and is always letting me know how much she is learning. I hear her practicing every night. Jennifer is professional, very experienced and wonderful to work with
Beginning ear training begins with pitch recognition. From there, we work through recognizing patterns, chord qualities, and sight-singing. More advanced students can expect to work on melodic and harmonic dictations.
Each session is tailored to the student's specific needs. We will move at his/her pace.

DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.
She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.
I had such an amazing experience training with Detrece! She always has such sweet positive energy. I was so happy that with me being more of an advanced singer she was able to teach me about my voice and tips that I never knew! I only had 5 lessons and still had a vocal breakthrough where she helped me realize my range is wider than I thought. She gave me more confidence and is always seeking to share opportunities with me. I’m so grateful to her!!

D is skilled at opening you up. From the warm welcome, opening exercise to her easy-going nature and intentional way of being. She's intuitive and an expert in her craft.
Ear Training was a huge part of my college experience. As a Jazz musician, being able to hear the musical context of your surroundings and adapt to them is hugely important. My methods include fun and challenging ways of memorizing pitch relationships that don't necessarily require an in depth knowledge of pitches.
My name is Tommy. I've been playing bass and guitar since I was 11 years old. When I was in high school, I won my school's Duke Ellington Jazz Performance Award my junior year. Around this time I began to work at my neighborhood's local lesson shop Let's Play Music! off of W Broad Street in Falls Church, VA. Following high school, I attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, studying jazz bass performance with players who have played and recorded with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Bobby McFerrin, among others. I received my degree in Jazz Bass Performance and since returning to the DC area have taught at Let's Play Music, Bach 2 Rock, and Music and Arts. Outside of my academic accomplishments, I play in and record a number of bands. I play out at different venues from Richmond to Baltimore regularly and ha
ve gone on tour twice before. I specialize in electric bass and music theory, but am quite comfortable teaching beginner to intermediate guitar.
Skills including interval identification, chord identification, and dictation will be learned.
Hi! My name is Rachel, and I have been teaching lessons professionally for over 10 years now. My primary instruments are voice and piano, and I also teach music theory/ear training/musicianship skills. I earned my degree in vocal performance from James Madison University, where I taught lessons to non-music majors as well as tutored general music for the student population. I also hold a masters degree in voice performance and pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory. I would describe my teaching style as fun and relaxed, with a strong emphasis on healthy technique. I believe that all students should have a strong technical foundation, and that begins on day one. Genres I teach include classical, musical theatre, pop, and accompanying skills for pianists. I can also help with audition prep on both instruments. I look forward to meeting with
Rachel very good. She listen to my concerns, and address them. Very professional.

Rachel provides instructions that are understandable, and that you can use to improve your technical skills and make true progress. She has also change my approach to piano practising. I believe I enjoy practising more and with greater efficiency. She is very talented, also has a great personality, bubbly and easy to talk to. I would highly recommend Rachel!

Rachel is a fantastic and knowledgeable instructor. My daughter first started with piano lessons and is now taking voice lessons as well. My daughter loves going to lessons with Rachel and looks forward to it every week. My daughter has learned so much. I highly recommend Rachel.
"If you are aurally challenged when it comes to intervals and harmonic progressions, I definitely recommend tutoring. Michelle was very patient during our
lessons and had different tips on how to identify certain progressions, which I appreciated. We also worked on complex rhythms together. It was actually really fun. She's very kind, resourceful, and an excellent tutor."
"Omer has been an excellent teacher! I’ve over heard several lessons with him and my son and I’m always impressed by the breath of knowledge he has. In ju
st a few weeks my son has been inspired to play the piano for hours at a time. Originally Omer was going to teach my son violin but they switched to piano so that they could explore their common interest in composing music for film. I am immensely pleased with him and recommend him wholeheartedly!"
"We worked on technical exercises that focused on the intonation areas I wanted to improve. I have a lot to practice."
"I'm delighted with Barbara as my piano instructor! As a senior citizen I find her knowledgeable, patient, encouraging, kind, friendly and professional i
n her approach. She takes into account my aims and goals as she develops effective lessons to reach those goals. Her music methods are up to date, as she matches the music to my preferred tastes. As she challenges me to reach my potential, she also allows for flexibility In order to meet my needs. I have also observed her working with very young children as well as young adults with the same satisfying results. I am very pleased and I recommend Barbara as the answer to your search for a piano instructor !"
"Fawn is great. She's reliable, punctual, smart, patient and great training me and my daughter how to sing on pitch. I can tell you that before Fawn, my da
ughter had 3 other vocal coaches and she was frustrated with little or no improvement. Once Fawn came into the picture, that all changed after the very first lesson! My daughter came home last night beaming because she got the LEAD, yes, the LEAD in her school musical. Something that has never happened and would have never happened without Fawn. We are sticking with her. I can't wait to see and hear my daughter and myself continually improve and become the best version we can of ourselves."
"Billy's approach to ear training really helped me a lot! He went at my pace and made references to popular song a to hear chords that, without context, ar
e hard to hear. He accommodated to my way of learning and went from there. I still use some of the methods he's taught me till this day!"
"She's a really patient teacher, and she helped me a lot. After the lesson with her, I analyzed how to listen to the bass line quickly. She also taught me
a lot short hands for ear training. I hope I could take her lesson again."
"First lesson went very well. Zack held our daughters interest and she was quite interested in the piano lesson."
"Krisztina is a wonderful musician and teacher! She is very patient and a wonderful asset to any musician looking to better themselves."
