I work with the student to develop a curriculum based on their musical interests and my own teaching pedagogy. I strongly feel that for musicians to own their education, they must have a say in what they play. Assigning method books and mindless etudes to practice doesn't have nearly the same effect asking them "Ok, what kind of music do YOU like? What do you want to PLAY? What do you want to LEARN?".
I believe that students learn best when they are invested in a subject, and the best way to get them invested is to individually get to know each one, speak to them on their level, and get them playing music they're interested in.

My lessons adhere to classical pedagogy with an emphasis on reading notation, as well as applied ear training. Whether you haven't picked up the instrument yet, have been playing recreationally on and off for a few years, or study at the collegiate level, my approach builds student's classical repertory, tone production and voicing for all registers, fast technique, and accurate intonation. I always use a variety of fundamental exercises alongside pieces that teach what the student is working on.
About Kyle
I don't just teach students how to play an instrument, I teach students important creative techniques for developing musical skills. Making music is a life skill that helps children and adults of all ages realize, develop, and utilize their expressive and creative talents. In my studio, I focus on

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.

Our daughter is in middle school and is playing in a band with about 20 other clarinets. At the first testing, she was seated in the middle of the pack. When she asked to take music lessons, we looked online and found Mikaela. Within a few lessons, Mikaela was able to find small things that made a huge difference. Now not only is our daughter playing better but has a lot more confidence with the clarinet as well.
Mikaela is very personable and patient. She really seems to care about our daughter and makes the lessons enjoyable. Not sure that we could have found a better instructor for our daughter!"
