My students and I have at least one meeting per week with the goal of preparing them for rated competitions. During this meeting, I will go over tactical themes with the student, challenge him/her with puzzles, go over and discuss Grandmaster games and opening variations, or play training games.

I will also chat with the student and find out what she been doing, what she has been working on, and ask her what problems she has encountered during her training.

About Daniel

Hi, I'm a chess tutor and competitor! I teach students of all ages and skill levels and have volunteered for the non-profit organizations Chess Challenge in DC and Chess Girls DC. I focus on one-on-one lessons with instruction geared towards preparing my students for competitive play. My rate is $50

My 14 year old son had several lessons with Daniel and enjoyed them very much. Daniel is clearly passionate both about chess and teaching. His lessons are always planned in advance and you can request specific topic to be covered. He is very patient, and allows student time to think through moves and strategies. After the lesson, he gives you a 'homework' puzzle to solve, which was reviewed in the following lesson. Definitely recommend!

I have been coaching chess for many years. What makes chess lessons unique with me is that I make the chess lessons exciting, fun to learn, I point out mistakes/weaknesses in a very kind way, I give good examples of moves/positions relate to real life, I teach people the psychology of playing chess, and I improve people's game through love and repetition. I teach several opening variations as well as middle-game and end-game tactics. But I focus on what people's weaknesses are and I make those weaknesses their greatest strength.

About Mathew

I have been coaching chess for years. I have been passionately studying the game of chess for 13 years. I am currently a 1987 USCF player (Class A player). My highest rating was 2121 for chess.com blitz rating. But I am committed to go to 2200+ USCF player (National Master player). I have won severa

"I normally don’t leave reviews, but after gone trough a few mediocre chess teachers, we are so happy we found Sam and I wanted to take a minute to say that Sam is an phenomenal chess teacher, our children( girl and boy, 6 & 9 ) Love his lessons and have grown so much in terms of chess skill level. Sam is very professional, super patient and uses exceptional effective teaching methods. He’s the best chess teacher we have found in south Florida, after years of changing teachers! Thank you Sam!"

"Mr. Siddharth is teaching our 5 year old. It has been just two classes and I see my son being excited for the class. Mr. Siddharth is very patient and takes time to go over concepts and tests them out with our son and never rushes him even if it goes beyond time.
Even before the classes started he called us to get an idea on our son's competency level which was very appreciated. We look forward to continue the training with him!"

"Matt’s coaching has helped me improve my mid and end game play tremendously. I had the tendency to make moves that would sabotage my strong board positions and lead to slow, but sure defeats. Much of Matt’s coaching has helped me see how to leverage my pawns and structure my board for better end-game closings."

Chess Openings & How To Start Your Game Strong

As a game, chess is traditionally divided into three phases: the opening, the middlegame, and the endgame. While all three are important, today I’m going to help you start out strong in the opening. When I first learned how to play chess, I played openings that really did not help me improve and left me with an awkward start to the game more often than not. Eventually, I adopted some of the openings that I will show you in this post and my rating skyrocketed. Opening Principles The first …

Chess Rules: a Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

I will admit to you, the reader, that most of the articles I have written thus far assume that the reader is already a fairly avid chess player, who is aware of the basic rules of chess and thus is interested in learning more advanced strategies, traps, and tricks with the goal of decisively defeating the opponent. But, of course, not everybody is born knowing the rules of chess---there are, in fact, many out there who are unfamiliar with the game, and need an introduction. Especially now …
