I am a life-long singer and a life-long learner, and I want to help you discover the joy of having music in your life! I was 7 years old when I started singing in our church choir, learning to read music as I practiced with the grown-ups every week. In high school, I sang in the choir and in musicals. In college, I majored in Music/Voice Performance and prepared for my senior recital. After earning my BA and graduating Phi Beta Kappa, I worked with youth camps and community theater and church choirs. I began substitute teaching for grades K-8 when my youngest child started school and was thrilled to step in for band lessons and general music classes along with general class curriculum. My 4 kids were in bands and choirs and musicals, and I loved coaching their auditions and solo spots at home. I taught Voice and Musical Theater through CYT for 7 years. I participated in 5 community theater productions and sang with Chicago Master Singers in that time as well. Collaborating with others as they explore their range as singers, musicians, performers, and human beings is one of the most exciting activities you can be involved in...and you can continue to do that for as long as you can breathe! I look forward to working with you and helping you discover your own voice! *** Lesson Details *** Singing involves your whole being: physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Lessons will include each of these aspects in a personal and fun dialogue. You will learn about the physiology of producing sound and how your body works. You will learn how to convey emotion with your voice, how to address anxiety and build confidence in yourself as a performer, how to follow the road map of a musical score and how to develop sight-singing skills. You will experience what it feels like to sing with your whole being and hopefully, share that experience with others in a unique performance. You will provide a CD player and a keyboard in your home. You will choose the pieces you want to work on and provide sheet music and accompaniment. I will help you make the most of what you've got and celebrate the joy of your gifts with you! If your lesson is in Math or English, my goal is to communicate concepts in creative ways across different learning styles. As a published writer and previously certified substitute teacher, I love helping students unlock the ideas behind symbols, whether they're words or numbers or musical notes! *** Travel Equipment *** Student provides: CD player, electricity. I will bring a keyboard and provide you with a CD of vocal warm-up exercises. I have samples of music to get started with, but eventually, each student will build his/her own library of sheet music and accompaniment tracks as we select songs to rehearse. Those materials can be purchased in many forms online or from a music store. *** Specialties *** audition coaching
