Study Abroad Program for Cello Performance

Learn cello in relaxed & friendly lessons from cellist with music degree and years of experience

Getting a solid foundation in technique is imperative for anyone wanting to learn the cello, no matter if the desire is to play for fun or to eventually join an orchestra. That is why I make it my goal as a teacher to establish the correct ways to have: good tone, proper posture, flexible bow hold, loose vibrato, and pain-free playing. All of my students that have graduated to university-level teachers have reported back that the teacher was happy with their foundation and they were not required to "move back" steps in order to gain additional technique. I generally use the Suzuki and ABC books to get students started(which employ mainly classical pieces and folk songs), but I am always open to other genres that the student is interested in. If there is a specific piece a student would like to play, we'll go over what technique is required to get there and use alternate pieces and exercises to finally reach that goal.

***Playing Experience*** I have 30 years of playing experience along with a Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance. I was the section leader of my university's orchestra as well as a full-scholarship member of the university quartet. I also studied for a year at a conservatory in Germany. As a professional gigging musician, I have played with Il Divo, Mario Winans, La Jolla Symphony, Doctor's Symphony, Dream Orchestra, Porta Caeli Chamber Players, and the quartet La Dolce. I still perform weekly with a group that was formed during my college days. We play for churches, weddings, corporate functions, and other fun events. ***Teaching Experience*** I have been teaching full-time since 2011 and am committed to my students rather than considering it a side job. Early on I took a few Suzuki Method courses and have discovered over the years what works for me as a teacher. I still have a mentor that I work with weekly to keep up to date on my playing and teaching skills. ***Performance Opportunities*** I offer recitals twice a year. Online they are done via Zoom and in person is at a local church in Altadena, CA. They are not mandatory, but suggested as preparing for a recital is a great way to really push yourself to polish a piece. I am also a member of MTAC (Music Teacher's Association of California) and can sign any of my students up for Certificate of Merit. This is a music study program with an annual evaluation and written assessment. *** Lesson Details *** Lessons differ slightly depending on the student. For those brand new to music, we'll use Essential Elements to learn note-reading and general music theory knowledge. Others with some music background, The ABC's of Cello and Suzuki books usually offer a good range of beginning pieces that progress at a good pace. Scales will always be a part of lessons - they are like what the alphabet is to language and are completely necessary. I am also open to outside pieces that students are interested in learning once they reach the correct level. ***Cancellation Policy*** I am really flexible when it comes to scheduling as I completely understand life throws things our way that we can't control and sometimes students just can't make it to lessons. But after years of having some students cancel an hour before the lesson starts, I had to implement a policy. If you give me more than 24 hours notice, it can be cancelled no problem. If it's less than 24 hours, I am happy to reschedule the lesson to a different day/time that week(or if the student is sick, to whenever they feel better). Or if you choose not to reschedule, I will mark the lesson as "missed" and it will be considered a paid lesson. If I need to cancel for any reason I'll always offer to reschedule, but if that doesn't work for you, I will cancel the lesson and it will not be considered a paid lesson.

    Teacher's studio
Jessica is warm, knowledgeable, observant and patient. Her studio is comfortable and she was flexible when my plans changed. She also made sharing written lessons easy via email. She is a good instructor. I’ve learned many things on my first lesson that my previous teacher neglected to teach me. I look very forward to more lessons with her.

    Experience

    Cello Instructor

    Aug, 2006 - Present

    The Green Cello Studio

As a private cello instructor, my job is to teach new or continuing cellists how to play and how to improve on the cello. I look for ways to make learning interesting by including music the student wants to play, even if that means arranging a popular piece myself so that it is more accessible for the student's level.

    Cello Instructor

    Aug, 2013 - Jun, 2020

    Hobart Shakespeareans

Hobart Middle School is located in a poor section of Los Angeles. A wonderful teacher by the name of Rafe Esquith has made it his mission in life to give the students lucky enough to be in his classroom an education filled with music, art, and fun. These students put on a full-length Shakespearean play at the end of each school year complete with music and choreography. I am the cello teacher for interested students. I started with 2 students the first year and it has expanded up to 5 this year with more hopefully to come.

    Cello Coach

    Aug, 2011 - May, 2014

    Jefferson Middle School

I am the cello coach for this middle school orchestra. At the beginning of the year, I demonstrate the cello to orchestra students so that they realize there is another instrument to play besides the violin. Then we take a few days for all the students who are interested to try out the cello with me as their guide. If they are interested, then the rest of the year I am the coach that comes in once a week to help the newer students get a handle on the orchestra pieces, since most cannot afford a private instructor.

    Cello Coach

    Sep, 2000 - Jun, 2004

    Polytechnic High School

I was the cello coach for the string, symphony, and chamber orchestras. I was responsible for helping the cellists prepare the more difficult spots in the orchestral pieces.
