About Zoe S.
Hello and welcome! My name is Zoe and I am so excited to teach you. I have been working with children since the age 13 and I absolutely love helping people learn. I have been a camp counselor and assistant director for ten years, so I have met and worked with a variety of families and children.
During my time in college I studied Early Childhood Education and Integrating music and dance into the classroom. I believe these two areas of study really compliment each other because of Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Students have different learning styles and as a teacher I want to get the information across in a clear and effective way for my students. Learning should be fun and interactive! My students loved how I incorporated games, projects, and technology to help them learn and succeed in the classroom.
After college I went on to volunteer for City Year. During my time in City Year I was an interventionist for fourth grade math. For forty five minutes my students worked on basic math functions and then worked on applying those functions to what they were learning in fourth grade. I believe that basics are extremely important when learning a new subject. You have to start from the ground and build up, so that is how I teach.
I recently received my TEFL certification where I focused on ESA methodology. This methodology allows students to learn English but also be able to apply it to their individual life and their goals. For example, if a student wants to learn English to be successful in living in an English speaking country, lessons would be focused on ordering food, listening to the news, or having conversations; whereas a student who is focused on being successful in a business setting would be learning Business English. Students also learn the information through elicitation, or discovering the information themselves. Most of the time students know the information, just in their native language. My job is to help students make the connection and learn English through the knowledge they already have.
Teaching has always been a passion of mine and I am just beginning journey. I am dedicated to my student's success and want to find ways to teach even more students!
