Hi, I'm Zak! I teach Broadway Singing, Piano (of any style), and College Essay Writing. I've played piano on Broadway for Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple. In 8th grade, I played "Rhapsody in Blue" with the Mount Vernon Orchestra, and had my original "Crooked Key Symphony" performed by their Youth Orchestra. I've taught Broadway singing as a music director at the Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre (VA), Dallas Theater Center, Lyric Theater of Oklahoma, Goodspeed, and The Public Theater - birthplace of "Hamilton" the musical. I love helping people discover themselves inside the songs they play and sing. Whether the goal is Broadway, a local open mic, or simply to have fun in your living room (all equally noble), I'd welcome the opportunity to help you connect with your work on the deepest level. If you're here for college essay writing - my college essays got me into Harvard and Yale, and with my help, yours could, too! Please ask me anything! I look forward to hearing from you :) NOTE: I only work with students who are age 16 and up.

I’ve been studying with Zak for a little over a year now and have made tremendous progress (if I do say so myself) thanks to his excellent and creative teaching. I started out as extreme beginner but was able to take off quickly with his guidance, and we’ve worked on many different styles— jazz, classical, standards, and more. Zak makes sure to check in on my goals often, and we don’t embark on a piece without discussing it first and thinking on whether it makes sense and is something I want to work on. One of my goals is to be able to improvise— I was incredibly far away from that when I walked in the door, and thanks to Zak I’m getting so much closer now! He does a great job at weaving in theory tips and many other things I didn’t even know I didn’t know. I’ve been through two informal recitals now while studying with Zak— and while performances are always a heart-racing (but totally optional!) adventure, they were great fun and I took a lot of pride in being able to chart my progress and effort, not to mention the delight of sharing music with family and friends. Above all, it’s really fun learning with Zak and sharing in his sincere enthusiasm. I never feel any pressure at all to reach a given milestone, only terrific support. I’ve studied music with a lot of teachers across a couple of decades, and none other comes close for the quality of time we work together. Can’t wait to see what we’ll get up to this year!
I switched to Zak as my singing instructor when I saw that he focused on Broadway. As soon as I walked in I felt comfortable and never like I couldn’t do something . He is super supportive and I like his technique and warm ups. He has encouraged me to try new singing techniques and he only has amazing things to say about my singing. I wouldn’t want anyone else.
Every lesson with Zak is always joyful and productive! He finds out exactly what I need to work on and teaches me the relevant techniques and skills. He's also incredibly funny and great to bounce ideas off of. He has helped me find the right song, timing, score, resonance, vowel sound, acting objective, inspiration, and so much more. Most importantly, Zak has given me the space to express myself and to feel confident enough to let loose my true voice!
