I am a professional guitar instructor. I earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and graduated with High Honors. My formal training includes classical guitar performance, jazz guitar and improvisation, music theory and arranging, psychology, piano, violin, recording, and much more.
With over 25 years of teaching experience and well over 30 years of experience playing music, I have enjoyed working with students as well as other musicians with broadly diverse backgrounds. I have performed solo, played in rock bands, blues and jazz combos, duos, trios, and classical guitar quartets as well as large guitar ensembles.
Students currently studying with me include young through older adult and retirement age students with performance goals ranging from the private, personal enjoyment of playing music, to professional and semi-professional aspirations.
I strive to provide a friendly, comfortable learning environment my students can thrive in. I won't pressure you to play in recitals in order to increase my studio size, but I will greatly encourage you to play an active role in customizing your own individual curriculum. As soon as you have the skills to do so, you should be learning to play the music you love.
Regardless of what your musical goals are, I would love to help you learn the skills you need to reach them. Thank you so much for your time.
My son has been progressing very well. He is happy with his teacher and looks forward to the class every week.
My instructor taught me technique and helped me understand the importance of this instead of going right into songs like most of my last music teachers.
I'm an older self taught player that finally decided to take lessons. I have been working with William for a little over a month now. He began with cleaning up my playing position. This was really big for me as I have had issues that prevented me from playing as long as I would like due to back and hand pain.
William spent the time to figure out where I was and wanted to go. Im very pleased with the progress I'm making and am confident that taking lessons with William was a great choice. He has also been very giving of his time to help pick out instruments and gear to move my instruction along.
I see a lot of instructors here that are players trying to augment their gigging money by giving lessons. Williams education and background really show in his lesson presentation and effectiveness.
I am 48 years old and started taken lessons from William a couple months ago. William is very patient and thorough and have learned more in those few months then I have in all the years I have been trying to teach myself. I would highly recommend William if you are looking for a guitar instructor no matter your background or specific music style interest.+ Read More
good step by step intro! next lesson next week.
I've been studying classical guitar with William (at his location) for almost 3 months now. Initially, he helped me find an instrument that would meet my needs and taught me how to care for it. I'd call him a connoisseur of classical acoustic guitars! He know how they should sound and has valuable guidance to provide for beginning guitarists like me who may not be as able to see or hear the differences. I'm glad I got his advice before making a commitment / investment on a particular instrument.
I am 46 and have a musical background (I already play both piano and trombone). William has very effectively adapted his teaching to fit with the skills I already have. In some cases that means speeding up and in other cases going back to basics to make sure I have the fundamentals down.
His knowledge of music and musical instruments enables him to very effectively describe to experienced musicians how the guitar is different from what they are used to and what they'll need to pay attention to.
William has been very focused on the details of correct technique, preferring to slow down and work specific things rather than moving on or cutting corners for the sake of getting through the method materials. If you want to learn how to play completely, correctly, efficiently and without hurting yourself William is your teacher.
One of the things I appreciate the most is William's patience. He's a stickler for correct technique so he doesn't let errors slide, but he corrects in a way that is both helpful and encouraging. There's no bit of guidance that he's given me that, when I put it into practice, doesn't dramatically help my progress. I've learned in a very short time to really listen to him. He knows what he's talking about.
I can wholeheartedly recommend William to anyone wanting to learn to play guitar. He's one of the best music instructors I've ever had!
I'm happy to answer anyone's questions on my experiences with William or this review.
I've been a self taught student via the internet for a year and a half and I recently moved to Phoenix and decided to take a stab at taking lessons. I've been taking lessons with William for one month and I can honestly say, I've learn more in my first lesson then I've learned the year and half I've been playing on my own. I was blown away with his patience, knowledge, and passion for teaching guitar.
William is definitely worth more then what take lesson charges. His lessons has super exceeded by expectation. I highly recommend taking lessons with him, there so much information he teaches regarding reading music, the proper way to hold the guitar, proper technique, learning scales, the proper way to hold a pick and proper equipment selection base on your style.
I can go on and on, but the bottom line is choosing William as a teacher will be an investment with your guitar playing and I promise you will not be disappointed.
I've taken lessons from William for several years. He helped me choose several of my guitars and worked with me on my acoustic, classical and electric guitars. His knowledge is extensive as guitars are his life. I've had other guitar instructors who teach to make money, or on the side. William on the other hand, teaches because he lives guitar, it's his passion.
William is exceptional with many of the technical aspects that improved my playing efficiency and increased my safety on the guitar. You might ask, "What do I mean by safety?" He taught me how to hold my guitar and reinforces playing it in a manner that reduces the potential for injuries and allows me to play for longer periods of time without getting tired. That's very important if you love the guitar!
No matter what style of playing I'm interested in, William has been excellent in showing me how to achieve the sound I'm looking for. If I want to play a particular song and he doesn't know it, all I have to do is play it on I-Tunes for him. He immediately shows me how to play the song, or adapt it to my level so that I can.
William is a patient and enthusiastic teacher that encourages and challenges me to continue to improve. That's why I continue to take lessons from him and recommend him to anyone who is serious about learning to play.
I chose to take up the guitar later in life (after retirement). I did not read music nor did I feel that I had any rhythm. William was extremely patient with me and brought me to levels that far exceeded my expectations. William has a rare ability to be able to put a person at ease and reduce their tension level. Sometimes it was through playing and sometimes through playing. He was able to read my apprehension level very well and seemed to always choose the correct method. I moved away from the area and thus far have not found a guitar teacher with the same abilities. Regardless of age or ability, I would recommend William to anyone. Were it not so expensive I would gladly fly back to Phoenix once a week to continue my lessons with William.+ Read More
As a self taught guitar player of more than 20 years I found myself "playing inside the box". William was able to give me techniques and advice to drastically improve my playing. From beginners to more advanced players, William is phenomenal. I worked at a large music store in Tempe for 12 years and for the last several years William was the only instructor I sent my clients to. I don't vouch for many people but I am more than confident vouching for William.+ Read More
William is not only a guitar teacher, but a great life mentor and friend! I took classical guitar lessons with him while in high school. He is dedicated, patient, attentive to detail, and kind to his students. He knows how to read students and structure instruction on an individual basis and day to day. He is such an inspiration and a fantastic teacher! I highly recommend taking lessons with William. He is phenomenal!+ Read More
William is an awesome teacher. We took our son to take lessons with him and it was a huge upgrade from the places we were going before. The price, amount of time and quality of the lessons our son got with Williams was phenomenal. Williams was well organized, easy to get along with and gave honest feedback that was needed when things were not being done as expected. I would highly recommend his services and look forward working with him again when our daughter decides to take lessons.+ Read More

I started taking lessons from William about a month ago. At the age of 59 i finally decided to take the plunge and i am so glad i did. William is a first rate teacher and musical mentor. Having been a teacher myself i really appreciate his teaching skills. He is incredibly knowledgeable and patient. His preparation is meticulous. If you are thinking of taking guitar lessons this is the man you want! William is a great guy, loaded with patience. I would recommend him to anyone who asks. You won't be disappointed.
For 15 years, I'd failed to stick with guitar through various teachers and self-teaching attempts. When I moved to Phoenix I started taking lessons with William. I've now been taking lessons with him for over 2 years.
William has guided me through all of my shifting interests. Starting with rock/blues guitar, then a foray into classical guitar and now into jazz. He has masterfully kept an emphasis on the fundamental techniques and theory needed to support teaching me the things I'm interested in.
William never fails to judge my mood and attention span on any given day and adjust his approach accordingly. If I'm mentally exhausted, we might learn a simple but fun song. Other days he will push me to learn things I previously thought beyond my skill level.
This April, I moved cross-country and William transitioned seamlessly into giving me online lessons.
On top of that, William is a great person and I now consider him a friend as well as a teacher.
I studied with William for just over 2 years until an out of state move brought our lessons to an end. I was gifted several lesson with William for Christmas and really only wanted to learn a very few basics that would enable me to play some basic rhythm on an old guitar I had. That changed quickly as I started my lessons with William as he opened up an entirely new musical world to me, showing me how to hear music differently than I ever had in the past. Prior to meeting and working with William I had tried teaching myself and ended up learning bad habits, form and posture and William helped me unlearn these traits which enabled me to actually learn and have fun playing guitar. I've never met a more patient person than William and would highly recommend him to anyone interested in learning how to not only play guitar but understand music. I still practice every day and his tips and instructions still guide me in my explorations. I can't thank him enough for everything he gave me . . . it truly opened up an entirely new world and approach to music for me.+ Read More
My son has taken guitar lessons from William for 8 years and I cannot recommend him any higher. I am proud to say that not only is my son a remarkable guitar player due to Williams teaching, he is a better young man. William has been such a positive influence and has become a dear family friend. He teaches guitar and respect and opened our family up to the wonderful world of music in the Phoenix area. I'm happy to share a photo of William, my son and I at a classical guitar concert at ASU. Spend your money wisely and hire William+ Read More
Will had been my teacher for about two years before I relocated to another city and he's the best instructor I've had. Will had a great level of patience, he's methodical with his lesson plans, and he's very analytical. His lessons are challenging and there is never a dull moment. Most importantly, he's passionate about music and he'll inspire you to love music as much as he does. I highly recommend Will!+ Read More
I took lessons from William for approximately three years before work-life squelched my personal guitar playing aspirations. William was a wonderful teacher with whom I still stay in touch. He was willing to share with me as much theory as I could handle, in addition to a diverse exposure to blues, jazz, rock, and from time to time, seduced my ear and stretched my playing aspirations by having me dabble in some classical (fingering techniques). He also exposed me to various musical genres through listening sessions to keep me motivated and present to me endless aural possibilities to which to aspire. I believe I could take a life time of lessons from William and never get bored. He is also a subject matter expert in all types of gear: guitars, strings, and equipment. He, during my tutelage under him, had numerous guitars of all types, makes and models (which he would occasionally allow me to play). I miss my lessons and hope he will be active teaching, when I am able to retire, so as to resume my learning adventure.+ Read More
I started taking lessons from Will when I was 15, and continued with him for about 3 years until I moved away. the first time I talked with him on the phone, he asked me several questions about what I wanted to play, what I liked to listen to, my goals as far as the instrument and then used this information to put together a personalized lesson plan that taught me not only what I wanted to learn, but what I needed to learn to become a real guitar player. I consider Will a personal friend and mentor, and whenever I go to visit him, I find that he is still teaching me, years later. If I have any regrets from my time under Will's instruction, it's that I never truely appreciated the quality and consistency of my lessons. If you are looking for the best guitar instructor from beginner to expert, you've found him and you won't be disappointed.
A side story,
2 years after I stopped taking lessons from Will, I stopped into a guitar store in Tempe and over heard a dad asking two of the employees about lessons for his son. They directed the man to a bulletin board covered In cards from local teachers and said " grab one that says Will Geiswite".
I've been taking lessons with William for close to 2 years and have enjoyed it greatly and learned so much. My guitar playing has improved exponentially since I started with him
He is a master of technique and very thorough with his teaching. If I have a question about what to do or how to approach learning something, William will explain in not only a way that makes sense, but show the most efficient and practical way to do it.
He is a very knowledgeable and friendly teacher.
Prior to meeting William, I took guitar lessons from another guitar teacher and my parents were noticing that after a few months of lessons, I was not improving from when I started. This is when I met William. From the get go, William requested that I bring a notebook, folders and my own pick which was vastly different from my last teacher who did not go by the book and never asked me to bring my own equipment.
Every lesson I had with William was structured, planned and never did I have a lesson where William was not prepared. In fact, the lessons in which we could not do much were my fault, not Williams due to me not practicing enough or forgetting my equipment. The lessons William teach are incredibly engaging as he does not go strictly by the book and is willing to cater the curriculum towards what a student is interested in. Although I am no longer taking classes with William due to schooling, it is because of Williams great teaching and remarkable persona that to this day I can still recall the lessons I learned.
Curriculum aside, William is a fantastic person who not only is funny and engaging, but has both the skill and love for teaching music. On a final note, one of the best aspects of taking lessons with Williams is that he genuinely cares about his students. There were many times were we reserved some time at the end of a lesson to talk about life or struggles that were hindering me in both music and in life. As a former student and friend of William, I cannot recommend a better music teacher than him, although I will say that if you like to slack and are not truly invested in music, than Williams might not be for you.
There's guitar teachers and then there's William! Being a classical guitar player himself, he is meticulous and precise when it comes to his instruction. He is exceptional in teaching students how to play guitar the correct way. He formulates his lessons to be student specific, and keeps record of the students progress. With William, you will learn how to crawl before you learn how to run, and you will learn it the right way, and will be a better musician because of his instruction and dedication to his students, which is the backbone to his dedication to music.+ Read More
Lessons with William are worth every penny! William came as a recommendation from a group of professional musicians - that's like getting advice on buying a car from a Formula 1 driver! William understands that music is truly a language you learn to speak fluently. It takes hard work, persistence, and the ability to develop the character it takes to do something really difficult! He not only has developed the skill of reading and playing music, but he knows how to make someone the best version of themselves. William is a part of our family and his influence is a life long blessing.+ Read More
William has been exceptional as a teacher for my daughter. My daughter started lessons at age 9 with a smaller guitar recommended by William and as she grew, he made recommendations on both electric and acoustic guitars.
His understanding her goals with music and personalizing a plan to help her attain those goals makes William invaluable.
Many programs are geared for teaching the student to play a song quickly which leads to boredom; the building blocks that William has set up provides the student with skills that will keep her engaged in this choice.
if you are a parent and you want the best for your child, choose a teacher that has credibility, and the student's best interest in mind.
