    About Suyeon K.

    Hailed for her “fluid, mellifluous sound”, Korea-born flutist Suyeon Ko is rapidly establishing her reputation as a soloist, orchestral player, chamber musician, and an educator. An active soloist, Dr. Ko has a passion to bring out the best quality of musicians can achieve. She has won top prizes from numerous competitions including: Myrna Brown Young Artist Competition, Matinee Musicale Scholarship Competition, TMTA Young Artist Competition, and American Protege International Competition, where she also made her solo debut in Carnegie Hall. Dr. Ko has performed in a variety of solo, chamber, and large ensemble settings. She has given recitals in South Korea, Australia, and around the U.S including Alaska, Chicago, Colorado, California, Indiana, Missouri, New York, and Texas. Moreover, Dr. Ko frequently acts as a substitute flutist in many orchestras that she has been selected as finalists including Pacific Northwest Ballet, New World Symphony Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and South Bend Symphony Orchestra. From 2016 Dr. Ko has been a member of the Volante Winds, a quintet formed in Bloomington, IN. Volante Winds seeks out creative collaborations in the pursuit of excellence in chamber music. Driven by a desire to share music with as wide an audience as possible, Volante Winds combines performance of the highest quality with a deep passion for pedagogy. Volante Winds were semi-finalists at the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, semi-finalists at the 2017 Plowman Chamber Music Competition. The quintet held residencies at Mineral Springs Chamber Music Festival in Winsconsin, Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival in Alaska, and Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in Korea where we were dedicated to educational outreach and public performances. Committed to education at all levels, Dr. Ko was appointed as the Director of the Pre-College Flute Academy at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in 2019. Open to all ages and levels, Dr. Ko acts as the recruiter, curriculum designer, lesson teacher, and conductor for the Flute Choir. Suyeon Ko earned a Doctoral of Music degree in flute performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Master of Music degree in flute performance from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Jeju National University in South Korea.

    Pre-College Flute Academy Music Director

    The Flute Academy is open to all ages who wish to study the flute through professional, high-quality music education that includes private and group lessons, flute choir, and performance opportunities. The program offers classes to all levels, from beginner to advanced. At the end of the semester everyone will give public performance at the Jacobs School of Music and will be given a Program Completion Certificate with individual photos.
