- Levels Taught:
- Beginner, Intermediate
Most of my students are, or become honor (AP) students. Learning music is especially helpful in learning math as music and math are based on patterns. Engineers and musicians have the same thing in common: they learn to recognize patterns easily.
For young beginners, I use Alfred's Beginner course. For students 9+ years of age, I use John Thompson's Modern or Adult course(s) - students will get quicker results - with emphasis on classical technique after students become familiar with five-finger hand positions and basic dynamics.
Both courses utilize practice CDs or online apps that contain pre-recorded accompaniments, so students feel as though they are playing along in a band, or orchestra - this is EXCELLENT for learning rhythm.
If a student leans more toward accompanying themselves on piano while singing, I can greatly assist as my 30+ professional career was based on piano/voice/guitar singer-songwriter; so I teach combination lessons if desired: piano/voice or guitar/voice. Come to me knowing which songs you want to eventually perform on piano/voice, or piano in general. Singing is all about controlling the air flow however I do not teach "Singing" without an instrument any longer.
- Teaches students:
- Ages 4 to 80 and special needs
- Teaching since:
- January 2010
After 30+ years of professional musicianship spanning across two continents (North America and Europe) with original published songs available digitally (on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc.) and two CDs on the market (a third still in production) I retired from "performing" in 2010 and started teaching classical, blues, and jazz piano, piano/voice, classical guitar, pop and/or rock guitar/voice, songwriting and theory. My motto: From the movie, Beethoven Lives Upstairs ... "Great musicians need the spirit of a gypsy; the discipline of a soldier!"
I especially enjoy teaching families with multiple siblings (as young as four - degreed in Family and Child Development: Social Services and Early Childhood Education) and can get any combination of two or more people playing music together (please see reviews).
If your young child is showing signs of high musical intelligence (singing on key, sings a lot, keeps good rhythm, or is attracted to an instrument, I would be very interested in talking with you to get them a good start in musical training.
Many of my current middle school Takelessons students started with me when they were four and five and now perform regularly in student showcases, school talent shows and in church. I have helped five students gain entry in Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy.
Lessons are recurring, once per week - it is extremely important to develop the brain, nervous system, fine motor skills simultaneously using repetitive movements, patterns, momentum. I host annual student showcases at independent senior centers, most students grow and love these experiences … the people there are great and it helps build students’ confidence levels.
I wrote my first song at 17 and helped work my way through college playing my original music and covers as solo artist in coffee shops in Manhattan KS and at KSU’s student union. As songwriter and founding member of “Progressive Wood” (a KSU prominent band), we performed at campus parties, state fairs and festivals as I earned my bachelors degree.
Starting 2005, I worked many years as one of Arlington ISD's favored substitute teacher, teaching general elementary music classes, middle and high school orchestra, band, and choir. I was asked to create and teach a beginning songwriting class for elementary students and from the very first day had kids K-6 behaving in the palm of my hand. Some of those students eventually recorded their own original songs in professional studios. Current students are composing their own songs with plans to schedule recording sessions in professional grade studios here in DFW. One guitar student in the 5th grade is planning a small business playing classical guitar at weddings (first wedding performance coming up June 22).
If you already know an instrument and want to take combination lessons - Voice/Piano or Voice/Guitar and/or composition, or brush up on childhood learned skills, I am an motivator!, I LOVE teaching people how to recognize and use creative energy. NOTE After 30 singing lessons, one of my adult students signed with eight grammy-award winning LA music producer for his first EP - left a successful career in law and started his tour on the East Coast after releasing his first digital composition on CD. Another adult female student recently released her first EP in 2018!
If you are the creative type and wish to compose your own music or need help with production, I teach not only composition … also arranging, music production, notation, business organization and legal aspects of copyrights and international distribution (experienced paralegal in entertainment law). I also am the founder and owner of SBT Records, and Little Road Publishing Company.
I have taught privately since January 2010.
I was a popular substitute teacher for general elementary music classes Grades 1-6; additionally, subbed for orchestra and band teachers for junior- and senior-high schools, hired on an as-needed basis. Most interesting and rewarding was writing and teaching a songwriting class for children Grades 1-6. Some of those children went on to recording their own compositions in professional studios.+ Read More
Paralegal Certification: With this certification, I am able to file music copyrights, and assist in entertainment law to attorneys (i.e., copyright infringement, etc. type cases)
Susan is a excellent teacher, she has shown great patience and allows you to learn at your own pace. For an adult student with very little childhood training and having taken lessons once before as an adult she has done a masterful job learning what I want to learn and has been very open minded on which direction to go in as far as my lessons go. I am amazed that she has pulled some thoughts and ideas out of me that I didn't realize I had and has taught me patience in learning the piano.
If you are an adult student wanting to learn the piano or advance in piano Susan is the perfect teacher, she is flexible and takes the time to learn what your individual goals are in the piano. She has changed courses with my learning based on my interests, and for that I am thankful. If you are looking for a very talented music teacher (especially if you have done lessons before and have been thinking of giving it one last try) I would highly recommend Susan as the person to work with. 5 stars all the way!!
very good lesson, Susan has been a pleasure to work with. I continue to learn a lot from her style of teaching in a very relaxed environment. After 3 lessons I have retained more from her than any one I have worked with in the past.
Susan was very welcoming and patient. My son is excited for more lessons.
SUSAN B. Gave me new direction and a great platform
in continuing to be a better musician. Also gave me
encouragement that makes me feel good about
what I have achieved.
My brother and I love Ms Taylor. She is patient and teaches us great skills on the piano. We thank God for the training.
Ms Taylor is so wonderful with my kids. They keep improving with each class and they love her so much.
Ms. Taylor is a great musical instructor! Her attention to the abilities of her students maximizes their skill. She gives them pieces to both challenge them and enable them to thoroughly develop their musical ability.
Susan does a great job working with my son Mitchell. He has learned a lot!
Great experience! Instantly fell in love with Susan and her teaching patience and style with our 5 year old! She did not want to leave and cannot wait for her next lesson!
I just had my first lesson with her and I LOVE IT. I think I have chosen the right teacher for my piano journey. She is very friendly and passionate about music. I am looking forward to studying with her on my next lesson.
Ms. Taylor's expertise and motivational teaching has led to my daughter being able to flourish with her piano lessons. In the 2 years that she has taken lessons, she became an intermediate student and has taken on more difficult pieces. Ms. Taylor is excellent in assessing her student's level and needs, and she encourages them to surpass their own goals.+ Read More
She is very patient with my son. My son enjoyed his first lesson.
Mrs. Susan was a perfect match for my son. She's very patient, knowledgeable and very kind! My son walked out from his first lesson with her with such excitement in jumping back into lessons after a five month break. Looking forward to many more!!
Susan is an excellent teacher because she tailors her approach to the student's needs and goals, regardless of the student's age or experience or what their ultimate goals might be. Singing is not one-size-fits-all and different people learn in different ways. Susan is very sensitive to that. In my case, she mixed exercises from a number of sources with her own techniques and guidance to help me develop some good habits and techniques and ultimately find my natural voice. I can be very hard on myself, but I always believed I could reach my goals with Susan.+ Read More
Reasons to love Susan Taylor: She has all the markers of a great teacher; she instructs well, is very patient, kind and encouraging. When I say ‘encouraging,’ I really mean that. She can be one of your biggest cheerleaders, always pushing you towards your goals and praising your efforts and acknowledging when you have improved. Something else about Susan is that she is helpful at crafting her lessons around your goals. Just what do you want to achieve with your lessons? Think about it, share with her your thoughts and she’ll help you get there! I also appreciate her calm nature, her organized approach to things and that she keeps a nice, clean space for me to come and learn all this fun stuff I want to know! I am VERY, VERY, VERY happy to call her my teacher.+ Read More
My daughter just had her first singing lesson, and she enjoyed so much! She is really excited for her next lesson.
Great teacher! My daughter has learned so much and loves working with her!
Very amazing teacher. Very kind and sweet and makes sure you understand the lessons. She is passionate in what she does and you can see that she loves to help others learn.
Nice experience my daughter love it!.
She's really nice and very welcoming. Recommend!
I loved my first lesson and I have already learned so much! I can't wait to go again!
Susan really tries to work with each individual. She finds out what they are interested in and implements that into the lessons. She really engages the student. Recommend!
Ms. Taylor is a great music instructor.
My daughter improved her skills in piano and singing.
She's very flexible with time /day of lessons as long as you tell her ahead of time.
She's the best instructor I know in Grand Prairie area.
Ms . Taylor is a great music teacher.
My daughter improved her skills in piano and singing.
She's very flexible with change in time/ day of the lessons.
She's the best music teacher in Grand Prairie that I know so far.
Very patient and helpful.
Excellent! Patient, professional, and very nice. I am well satisifed with what Laren has learned, so far. Playing the piano and singing at the same time! I highly recomment Ms. Taylor. :-)
Valery loved her 1st class.. she can't wait to go again next week. Ms. Taylor was firm but so nice to the girls.
Ms. Taylor was so helpful with my girls. She has great knowledge of her instruments.
I have had four lessons so far, and cannot wait to continue them!
We love Ms Taylor! My son (6) started piano on his 5th birthday and a year later he is still excited and can't wait for his lessons with Ms Taylor. He wants to practice and is always so excited when he finishes a song. He loves showing off to his friends and family, playing songs on the piano. Admittedly, when we started piano, I wasn't expecting much, as my son was a typical 5 year old boy, who likes to wiggle and loses focus quickly; however, Ms Taylor is caring, patient and very knowledgeable and works great with children, and my son is really enjoying his piano lessons and has asked to take on guitar lessons as well in the future. Great teacher and experience!+ Read More
excellent piano teacher
Susan Taylor is an excellent piano teacher. We are very, very happy with the lessons she has given us. She has that much desired quality of being flexible and understanding, not pushing the student too hard, and yet expecting the student to "perfect" her short pieces, so that she is playing beautifully right from the start. I highly recommend Ms. Taylor to anyone, adult or child, who is interested in learning to play the piano.
Ms. Taylor is a wonderful teacher. She is very patient, caring and understanding. I am very shy and have anxiety problems but she does her best to help me to relax and not feel so shy. She is very knowledgable and helpful. You couldn't ask for a better instructor.
Suzan is a good piano teacher; my doubter was accepted to good music based school after only a short time preparation with Suzan for an audition. She is always pleasant to work with, highly knowledgeable and very professional. If my daughter continues the lesson with her, she will be perfect playing the piano or even be a teacher herself. Keep up the good job Suzan.
Great teaching skills
Susan has a great way with my son. She is very patient and sweet. She also is very knowledgeable about teaching my son a particular way as he has ADD/ADHD. He loves playing the piano which makes it easy as a mom to have my son practice. I forgot to add that she rewards my son when he plays well. Ty Susan!
