- Levels Taught:
- Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
I have 47 years of playing experience and I have taught literally hundreds of students to play the guitar. I first make sure each student learns to hold the pick and the Guitar properly, and the correct way to pick and strum. This will ensure that the student doesn't develop poor habits.
For little children, I first teach them to pick their favorite songs.
The next level is to learn Rhythm/Strumming patterns and your basic chord and chord progressions so that you can play along with all your favorite songs.
No matter what style of Guitar that you wish to learn, I have pretty much taught them all. If you want to be a lead player, I have got you covered there too. I can teach you to be the best picker you can be.
Not only will I teach you to play an instrument, but I will teach you to understand the music. In this way, you won't be playing like a computer program. You will become teachers yourselves.

Hi everyone, I am so excited that you are interested in learning to play an instrument! When you take lessons from me, not only will you learn to play music, but you will have fun learning it as well. I will teach you to play the instrument of your choice without actually having to read music. And, you will be playing music from the very first lesson. We will get to the reading of music later if you so desire.
During my 35 years of professional teaching, I have taught hundreds of students to play musical instruments. As far as I know, I have personally taught more La State Fiddle Champions than anyone else. I have even taught celebrity students such as the children from the Duck Dynasty television series.
Because I play somewhere around 15 musical instruments, I have a unique way of teaching music that ties all music together making it easy to understand. You will find yourself loving your music lessons.
I love to teach by teaching songs and I mean fun songs. We will learn Cotton Eyed Joe, Cripple Creek, Old Joe Clark, Love Me Tender, Amazing Grace, Fire on the Mountain and many, many more. It will not be a chore to get you or your kids to practice their instrument, but you may have a hard time getting them to put it down.
Whether you are just interested in learning to play songs that you know or whether you want to write your own music, I can teach you the ropes. You will have a musical understanding that few have.
Violin/Fiddle students, I can fix any fingering problems that you may be having in a matter of minutes, and you will have complete fingerings for every song that we play. You will have plenty to practice on while waiting for the next lesson.
Also, as an added benefit, I will be accompanying you on the Guitar which is beneficial when it comes to being able to hear if you are playing in tune, and this also gives the feeling of being part of a band.
Guitar students can learn many different styles of playing. I teach Rhythm, Flat picking, Fingerstyles, Country, Rock, Folk, Blues, Classical, and pretty much any other style of playing the guitar.
For all you young Mandolin players, get ready to pick! I will have you playing all the fun tunes So if you are ready to learn an instrument for you or your child, let me know and we will get you playing ASAP!
I taught music from my home studio and on the road since 1987. I have taught Guitar, Fiddle/Violin, Mandolin, Dobro, Keyboard, Ukulele, Banjo, Drums, Recorder, Harmonica, and even the Dulcimer.
I taught music at the Music Gallery of Ruston.
I taught Guitar at Haymakers Guitar Store in Ruston La.
I was licensed into the ministry with the SFSFC (Southern Fellowship of Spirit Filled Churches) and served on the Board of Directors.
Wow! Steve, you never cease to amaze me-all of these instruments! Not only do you play them, you teach other people to play them and in different styles of music! But underlying all of this is your lifelong love, and reverence of music and its history. Teaching is your lifelong ambition. Just as important, maybe more so, is your love and respect for the people you teach! You have devoted your life to music! I’ve known you for a long time. You are the “real deal”. I respect you so much!Show More
My sons and I took guitar and banjo lessons from Steve for several years. He is an excellent teacher and is great with children.
I really enjoyed learning from Steve! He has such an easy way to help you learn. Steve taught me many things easily that I had always found difficult to learn and put into practice before, as I wasn't taught the right way. Learning from Steve will be a lot of fun and you won't regret taking his lessons. Because of what I learned from him I was able to make a CD with a friend in a studio. It was a wonderful experience and a lot of fun. I couldn't have done it without him! I am and always will be amazed at Steve's knowledge and skill. I would give 10 stars if I could....literally the best instructor ever!Show More
I absolutely love my lessons with Steve! They are fun and entertaining and he's great about teaching you what you want to learn. His knowledge of music is evident. He not only knows it, but he is tops when it comes to teaching what he knows. The best part is how he makes it so simple and easy to understand. I love that he is very patient because I need that! I know that anyone, no matter your age, will benefit from Steve's expertise. Highly recommended!!!Show More
