As a musician, I wear many hats: opera singer, voice teacher, choir director, cantor, accompanist, and vocal coach. I work with singers of all levels - I believe that everyone can learn to sing, and that my job as a voice teacher is to help each student uncover what is unique and special about his or her own voice. My foundational training is classical singing, and those principles are what I teach, but I also try to help students apply healthy singing to whatever style they wish to sing. Whether you are looking for basic vocal technique, specific audition prep, solfege and sight-singing, or performance coaching, let me know how I can best help you achieve your goals! I hope that all of my students develop not only their skills as singers and performers, but also along the way develop and nourish a love of music and music-making.

About Stephen M.

I’m an opera singer based in Austin, TX, a city I’ve called home for the past 9 years. In addition to both classic and contemporary opera, I perform a wide range of repertoire: musical theater, Gregorian chant, choral music, you name it!

I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Tech University, and a Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University, both specializing in Vocal Performance. As a Young Artist, I’ve performed with Opera NEO, Charlottesville Opera (formerly Ash Lawn Opera), Spotlight on Opera, Luke Housner’s Summer Opera Workshop, and the Aspen Opera Center.

I have operated the Maus Vocal Studio since moving to Austin in 2012, and my students have been selected as members of Texas All-State Choirs, have received numerous 1st Division ratings at UIL Solo & Ensemble, and have been semifinalists, finalists, and winners at the NATS auditions held by the South Texas Chapter. In addition, students perform in various choirs and musical theater groups throughout Austin, and have been accepted to collegiate programs at Oklahoma City University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston, University of North Texas, and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

As a guest artist and teacher, I have given master classes with Youth Opera of El Paso and the Aspen Music Festival, and also worked with educational outreach through Austin Opera. In the summer of 2019, I also participated in the educator cohort of BroadwayEvolved, and have also spent time working as a musical director/vocal coach for various high school productions.

All thoughts of programs, awards, and competitions aside, I have one goal for all of my students: building a healthy vocal foundation that allows them to enjoy singing for the rest of their lives. I do work primarily with middle and high school age students in my studio, but a wide range of ages are welcome. Stylistically I tend to focus on classical and musical theater singing, and I thoroughly enjoy coaching students to prep for auditions or other events. If you want to build your skill, have some fun, and explore singing with joy and freedom, I hope you’ll check out the Maus Vocal Studio!
