About Sorcha B.

I am a flute performer and teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience, currently located on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington. I have experience performing in large and small ensembles, as well as being a featured soloist in recital and orchestral settings. I have been involved with the premier of dozens of new works ranging from guided group improvisation to solo flute to flute and electronics; these premieres have taken me across the country with special performances in New York City, Illinois, and Colorado. My orchestral and chamber music experience includes performances in New York City, Chicago and Italy, where I have often been Principal Flute or featured soloist. My teaching style revolves around the beauty that we can create with music; ultimately, this is art! I especially focus on beautiful tone and musicality, with attention given to mindfulness and concentration. Each lesson includes technical work and precision, as well as more exciting musical work - I cater to your goals, needs and preferences! I have experience teaching beginners through college students and my students have placed well in regional and state-wide competitions and auditions, going on to study flute performance in well-respected universities. I earned my Masters in Music Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and my Bachelors in Music Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I also have a Certificate in Arts Management from the University at California, Irvine. I love teaching and look forward to helping you become the best musician you can be! For in-person lessons, I require all eligible adults and children be vaccinated.

Sorcha takes the time to completely understand what you want out of the lessons and how you learn best, then she does a fantastic job of tailoring each practice session to your needs. I love how she observes when you play and catches subtle points to help you improve your performance and get more out of your practice; she really wants to help you learn and enjoy! She also has great knowledge of various topics in music that you can tap into.
