About Shawna B.

My name is Shawna and I am a musician and a music educator. Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, I began studying music when I was nine years old by taking clarinet and piano lessons. I graduated from Arizona State University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. After graduating I became certified with the Arizona Board of Education and was a band director between two schools in downtown Phoenix before moving to South Miami, Florida in 2012, and started a Kindermusik program at the Miami Children's Museum. I am back in Phoenix and currently am the music teacher at an elementary school in downtown Phoenix and perform on clarinet within the community with local groups.
As a teacher my goal is to provide my students with an enriching musical experience, because every student can be a musician regardless of their age or ability. I have experience teaching beginner to advanced studies on clarinet, beginner to intermediate studies on saxophone and music theory, and beginner studies on piano. Regardless of the instrument, I make sure that my students have an in depth understanding of their instrument. I explain all concepts regardless of how advanced in the simplest of terms so that my students can fully comprehend the objectives of every lesson.
*** Lesson Details ***
I am a friendly and approachable person who believes that building a good relationship with a student is the key to learning. My lessons are structured but are individualized to meet the needs of the student. I focus on the technical skills of the instrument as well as reading music. I will assign material for the student to practice on at home, but I am willing to work on music from school and allowing the student to have the freedom to choose what style/genre they are interested in performing. At the end of the every lesson the most important objective is that every student is playing music and enjoying the music that they are creating.
*** Travel Equipment ***
During a lesson I provide a music stand, metronome, tuner, and any extra teaching materials. My students are responsible for their instrument, accessories (reeds, swabs, cork grease, etc.), and ideally have a music stand and metronome for at home practice.
*** Specialties ***
I teach all levels of students from beginner to advanced, and all ages.
I have experience using a wide variety of method books and styles in my teaching. I determine which I use based on the needs and abilities of the student.
