I am a singer, conductor, and church music director based in Athens, GA where I am currently pursuing my Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Georgia. Previously, I completed my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, where I was also a professional choral singer, music theory and ear training tutor, voice and piano teacher, and occasional rock and pop keyboardist in the Capital District. In keeping with my belief that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to singing, you can expect a fair amount of discussion and strategizing for our first few lessons, in order to discover what methods will work best for you and your voice. That being said, I consistently emphasize a few core beliefs: -The most beautiful person we can be in life is ourselves, and the most beautiful sound we can make in singing is with our own, true, and unique voice; -All singing, regardless of style or genre, should come from a place of respect for one's instrument; -Conquering technical limitations is the best path to finding and cultivating one's true voice, by establishing grounded, diaphragmatic breathing and breath support, a relaxed but focused and flexible vocal mechanism, and an awareness of one's body and mind as they relate to singing; -Picking repertoire that is appropriate to one's experience and capabilities; -A studious attention to diction for whichever language being studied, including English, Italian, German, and French; -Knowledge of and appreciation for the music theory of the repertoire studied Being that my experience is primarily with voice, my piano lessons are a bit less intense than voice. Many of my beliefs with singing carry over into how I teach piano, including a solid technical foundation built on chords, scales, fingerings, music theory and ear training, varied repertoire that allows for an exploration of as many styles possible, and a recognition of and respect toward one's abilities and limitations. Outside of lessons, I enjoy songwriting, reading, hiking, cooking, and spending inordinate amounts of time on Netflix. If you have any great recipes or show recommendations, I will gladly accept them. I look forward to helping you realize your artistic potential!

Sean used to teach me keyboard and music theory and I’ve become not only a better musician, but a more well versed musician because of him. He has a very unique perspective and manages to bridge and connect concepts in such a way that really shows how all aspects of music are interconnected in ways you might not expect. Not only this, he showed me how these things connect from a musicians perspective, but also from a listeners perspective as well. Things like how parts work together and how changes in voice leading can drastically improve or diminish a performance. Super intricate stuff that I was able to understand in minutes thanks to his teaching style and personality. Great guy, even greater teacher. Would be the first recommendation I give to anyone I know.

I had the privilege of learning from Sean as a student in his choir. As a conductor, Sean is clear and concise in his expectations of students, and is very effective in communicating not only constructive feedback, but specific strategies to address that feedback. As a student, I appreciated how for any issue, Sean had multiple techniques ready to go. If one technique or suggestion was not connecting, he was always able to shift and have other pedagogical recommendations to tackle the problem. Sean’s strength as an educator lies in his ability to balance vocal technique and production with an emphasis on the artistry of singing and performance. I would highly recommend Sean Butler as a teacher for any person looking to grow as a vocalist.

Sean’s musicianship is astounding, and that directly correlates to his teaching; though he can hear a wrong note instantly, his feedback is always supportive, allowing you to work and grow in a welcoming (yet (reasonably) challenging) forum. His range extends well beyond the stereotypical confines of classical music, making him an ideal teacher for anyone, of any age, interested in any style. Additionally, his accepting nature is ideal for those seeking a no-judgment learning space. Was truly impressed by my time with Sean, and would recommend him tenfold!
