About Scott W.
Hi! I am Scott and I began teaching piano in 1983, which is when I learned that I love teaching beginners to play the piano. I enjoy helping beginners learn the basics of piano playing and seeing them grow.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in piano pedagogy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I also took all of the classes in the general music education program in order to learn ways to make learning the piano more fun and interesting to my students.
I teach using a method called "The Music Tree." This method teaches beginners to play the piano by recognizing intervals (the distance between 2 notes). This allows the student to be able to transpose music (or play music in another key) right from the beginning. I like "The Music Tree" because most of the pieces include a duet part that the teacher can play with the student. After a student completes the first book, I supplement lessons with music that the student wants to play (popular music, holiday music, etc.).
