Sam began my musical career at age eleven with the trumpet, receiving state-wide and regional recognition over the years as an esteemed symphonic player. Moving into his teenage years, his taste began to shift as he discovered the guitar and began experimenting with new styles, from first-chair guitarist in the high-school jazz ensemble, to performing shows as heavy-metal lead player with various bands.
At Collin College, he studied classical guitar with master player and acclaimed music professor, the late Sabine Madriguera. He also studied music theory, composition, and performance, translating his technical knowledge as a trumpet player into the world of guitar. Recently, he has focused the last few years primarily on cultivating more advanced skills as an acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter. Additionally, Sam offers multi-instrumental musical accompaniment for yoga and other movement-based practices.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Sam earned a graduate degree in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA where he explored indigenous/shamanic traditions, archetypal mythology, Eastern philosophy, spiritual counseling, and eco-therapy. He is also trained in a mind-body therapy modality called Hakomi, while working as a group leader for the Stepping Stones Project — a nature-based rites of passage organization for youth. He lives, loves, and plays in San Rafael, CA with his wife Olga, parents John and Janie, and 10 month old son Julian.
Sam offers lessons in beginner and intermediate guitar, bringing a thoughtful approach to his teaching style, supporting the natural emergence of each students' inherent musical gift. Patient and kind, Sam offers his students a safe and supportive container for the learning process. Together we will develop customized lessons centered around the student's desired area of interest, whether it be music theory, song-writing, blues guitar, acoustic fingerpicking, or jazz.
Sam can provide the use of a great dual-input amp that supports guitar and vocals simultaneously. He also offers high quality microphones, headphones, a Yamaha keyboard, and a 60th anniversary sunburst Telecaster for student use in lessons.
Beginner/Intermediate guitar, music theory, songwriting, improvisation, light vocal technique, singing/playing. Music genres include blues, jazz, pop, rock, metal, country, beginner classical and bossa nova.
