Viola with Sam S.

My name is Sam S. I am a violinist and violist based in Southern Maine. I grew up in a musical home, up north in Eastport, Maine. My musical upbringing in a small coastal town was unusual, but incredibly fruitful. The small town life offered me performance opportunities through an active Arts Center, and the courage and support to push boundaries in my work. I earned my summer money busking on the streets, and learned about ensemble playing in our local string orchestra. My childhood fostered my love of music, and gave me the freedom to explore music in wildly different directions. As a teacher, I look to inspire students to find their voice through their instrument, and to learn how to be creative while also building healthy practice routines. As a freelance performer, I've led a fiddle band, performed in orchestras, played a wide variety of chamber music, improvised, composed, and much more. Groups I've played with include the Portland Ballet, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra, Vigorous Tenderness, and the Back Cove Contemporary Music Festival. I strive always to prioritize creativity, expression, and energy in my music-making.
