About Ryan R.

Thank you for taking the first step in your musical pursuits. I am a professional music educator and trumpet player with close to 25 years of teaching experience. I graduate Cum Laude from CSU-Northridge with a Bachelor's in Music Education.

My focus is first and foremost on building a characteristic tone, building on a foundation of sound breathing. My aim is to make sure students are playing with a sound set up enabling them to succeed immediately and in the long term.

I studied trumpet with Roy Poper (now at Oberlin Conservatory of Music) whose philosophy and methodology serves as the basis for my approach with students. This has been successful with students of all ages and abilities as well as my school music students.

As a player, I have played or worked with jazz musicians Claudio Roditi, Pete Christlieb, Conte Candoli, Greg Karukas, Buddy Collette, and Ron King. I continue to play and hone my skills as an instrumentalist and teacher. I also work as a music copyist for several songwriters and composers.

I am comfortable in all styles of music and can assists students with standard classical repertoire as well as develop skills in jazz including improvisation.

I am able to do both video/online lessons (especially during Covid 19 protocols) as well as in person (when Covid 19 protocols have been lifter) for students who are local to Santa Monica, CA. I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your musical goals and aspirations!!!

Ryan is a gem of a teacher. My son has been taking trumpet lessons with Ryan for the past 4 months and I couldn't be happier with the results. His love for music and teaching shines through whether it's an in person or online class. My son now enjoys practicing and looks forward to his lessons with Ryan.

I have been taking piano/music lessons from Ryan for 8 months now. It has been a great journey with him. As a 40yo student, I always have my ways of learning music (or anything), and Ryan truly customized every lesson to my likings. And these changes based on what was going on in my life at the moment of the lessons, be that a celebration, a loss, a growth and such. So the lessons with him have been healing process to me like a therapy. Now I understand why there is such thing as music therapy. I started lessons with him to play piano, but he had been showering me with lots of music theory which I have been always curious about. It is like learning a whole new language and it opened up my eyes to a world of music. Ryan is kind, friendly and flexible. An hour lesson with him give me happy and positive energy for a week. Why wouldn’t musical conversations give anyone such pleasure? I am committed to continuing my musical journey with Ryan!
