It's complicated.

I would highly recommend this teacher for children and absolute beginners. Very knowledgeable and very thorough. Takes you from the very first steps in learning music one note at a time and proceeds from there. Makes sure you get every note correct. If my kid expressed an interest, I would not hesitate to sign them up with Ryan.

However, I can't say I'd recommend this teacher for adults or people with some existing background in music. I informed him that I have some knowledge of music and I was currently refreshing my music reading skills on my own time outside of this class. I hoped to learn chords, scales and arpeggios, hand independence exercises, things of that nature. Regardless, our course material was a book that seemed geared towards children which covered material I've already seen, such as one note exercises and nursery rhymes. I could have bought this book (or, preferably, a book more geared to adults) and gone through the same exercises for free at a much quicker pace. I had hoped for more immediately usable, customized instruction based on tips and techniques that come from the experience that he, or someone at his level, clearly has. I accept some responsibility for the lack of progress in the short amount of time we were meeting (the pace of the course really did not match the length) but I felt that what my hopes/expectations were, which I clearly expressed from the beginning, were not met and I was instead put into the same curriculum as someone who had never seen music before. I understand teachers want their students to progress on a clearly defined path, but the class was not cheap and I hoped for/expected a more personalized instruction for the money I spent.

Overall, I'd say that the class did not meet my expectations, but I wouldn't feel good giving him only 2 stars. He is clearly a good teacher in many respects as well as being both friendly and knowledgeable and an extremely skilled musician. Aside from the course not meeting my goals/expectations, I'd give him as a teacher the highest marks.

I have known Mr. Murphy for a year and a half. He was the director of my 8-year-old son in the children's choir at my church and now he teaches this same son piano lessons in our home. What impresses most about Mr. Murphy is his patience with children, his genuine respect for them and his way of demanding from them while at the same time really motivating them to do better. I know my son looks forward to his time with Mr. Murphy every week.

Mr. Murphy has been teaching our granddaughter voice lessons for several months. He is doing exactly what I was wanting for her and that is voice control. I can hear the two of them as they are having the lessons and he interacts so well with her. He is well qualified to be a teacher of music and we feel so fortunate to have him..

Ryan is teaching two of my kids piano. My daughter is 17 and my son is 10. He interacts well with both. Ryan is very knowledgeable and talented. He has high expectations, but is patient. I also like that he is very devout.
