    About Roy S.

As a simple introduction, my name is Roy and I have been a musician and music teacher for over 40 years. Guitar is my principle instrument, although I also teach bass, beginning keyboards and drums. I studied classical music, musicianship, ear training, and theory in college. After many years performing in bands and recording music I progressed to jazz theory, sight reading, and improvisation at Dick Grove’s Jazz Workshop in Studio City. I teach all ages and all styles of music including blues, rock, jazz, country, folk, finger-picking, technique, musicianship, ear training, theory, and important tips when playing with others. I am here to help you explore your own identity, direction, and innovative niche, so you can take music wherever your heart leads you. I believe I have an aptitude for teaching because of my personality, patience, knowledge, and experience. There are definitely better players than I, but not all of them have the ability to teach. I encourage fun learning while simultaneously studying the math behind the sound. I also believe that the best vehicle for improvement is praise and encouragement. I hope this note finds itself in the hands of someone who truly wants to learn the foundation and aesthetics of music, but most importantly the joy that comes from making music. Thanks, Roy *** Lesson Details *** I love teaching, but what's even better is a student that is eager, focused and really wants to learn. My lessons are structured when it comes to all the "need to know" stuff, but are generally laid back and fun. Depending on the level of the student my approach will vary. I think it's important to be versatile, as that would allow one to play in different situations, be familiar with a variety of play lists in a band situation and it basically broadens your horizons as a musician. My students will learn as much theory as necessary for their level, and probably learn some songs that they would like to play live some day. *** Studio Equipment *** in home recording studio, amps w/ seating for parents *** Travel Equipment *** I have a variety of guitars, basses and amps, but I would hope hey should have their own instrument so they can practice. *** Specialties *** Blues, jazz, rock, fingerpicking, technique, improvisation
