Welcome to the Studio!

I am very excited to be able to work with you this year. Voice study is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. There is something special about developing an instrument that is inside you. Each voice is unique to the student and possesses an individual beauty. Teaching voice has become my primary passion and I can’t wait to help you improve. This syllabus will give you an overview of studio requirements and expectations.

COURSE RATIONALE:
Singing is a skill, a sophisticated blend of fine-tuned muscular coordination and performing artistry. Concepts presented in lessons, when reinforced by your regular practice, will support skillful singing and compelling performances. Whether this is your first set of lessons as a vocalist or whether you are an experienced performer, these lessons will help you grow as a singer. We will discuss technical ideas as applied to both vocal exercises and repertoire, balancing your development as a technical singer with your improvement as a performer and presenter of music.

OBJECTIVES

Singers will:
• Explore healthy technique in vocal exercises and apply concepts within repertoire
• Develop regular practice habits to support vocal development
• Learn, rehearse, and memorize vocal works
• Expressively present vocal works in performances
• Build technical skills and musicianship

In as short as one semester, Dr. Griffeath has helped my voice tremendously. He genuinely cares about his students and works hard to understand how each one learns.

Dr. R is a very talented vocalist who has a strong background in Alexander Technique. Combining the two makes a very sympathetic and understanding mentor. He can hear all of your tensions, including the ones you aren’t aware of. His style of teaching is a very natural approach and he will not ask you to do anything that hurts or pushes you too far. What stands out the most is his determination. He is determined to help you grow. I am very lucky to have him as an on staff professor.

He cares greatly about students’ progress, well-being, and enjoyment of the instrument. Highly recommended.
