Creativity, skill and love of music are the key elements that I work to encourage in every student. Over the years my teaching has evolved and I find it gratifying to take people far beyond their own expectations while helping them achieve their goals. I believe everyone is musical and just needs the right key to tap into their own creativity.
For beginners it's important to study with an excellent teacher. Setting a solid and creative foundation makes all the difference!
For advanced players studying with a great artist takes you greater artistry.
Weekly private lessons focus on technical skills in either piano, voice (or a combination of both) and a strong musical foundation. Theory and Ear Training are fundamentals that are embedded in this approach to developing a complete musician and artist.
I have over 20 years experience working with students as young as 3 and old as 85! Often multiple generations in a family study together making for a rich family experience.
Performance opportunities: Recitals, Concerts Cabarets and Musicals are a part of developing into a musician and singer and enhancing a love of music that will last a lifetime!

Piano - Classical, Jazz, Blues and Improvisation. Current students are beginners to professional musicians and music teachers.
Voice – I am an accomplished vocal coach and songwriter and currently work with a wide variety of singers from young beginners to professionals who look to develop through ear training, singing and songwriting. In a unique way I guide people to become better performers and musicians through the combination of voice, piano and composition.
I work with students as young as 3 or 4 and into their 80’s. It’s important to begin with an excellent teacher from the start to set a good foundation and to have the ability to develop as quickly and thoroughly as possible. I enjoy working with beginners as well as accomplished musicians. I also believe that music is one of the great joys of life and that lessons should be FUN!
Besides a wide variety of performance opportunities through my Family to Family Concerts, I also offer my students the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, a gold standard music curriculum.. The ABRSM is accredited in over 100 countries worldwide and exams are offered twice per year in all instruments and voice.

A message from Robert: Hello, I am a master teacher focusing on the classical repertoire along with a very creative approach to improvisation and composition. I help students to achieve their interests of music rather than focusing on teaching one particular method. Classes are tailored to the student and constantly evolving. This has led me to work in a variety of mediums and styles including Jazz, improvisation, rock and blues. This approach also enhances an understanding and love of classical music.
I also guide my students in the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. (ABRSM) Exams are offered twice per year.
I have also found it inspiring to work with people with disabilities and help them find a way to express themselves musically. I give lectures and workshops in the area and around the country on improvisation and creativity along with concerts of my own music.
I also work with a number of students in vocal coaching and accompanying.
New this year are seminars in songwriting for adults and children. Groups of 4-5 collaborate on new songs. Film and video composition coming soon!
for 25 years I have been running the Robert H. Studio as a creative laboratory of music. A huge range of students have come as beginners and left as young artists as well as a host of adults who came to play or sing and have found that they too can compose, write songs and perform professionally. And have a great deal of FUN!+ Read More

Working with Robert for the past several weeks has me wondering why I waited so long to sign up! He makes lessons entertaining by using games and improv as opposed to just exercises. I find my lessons challenging, but also fun and encouraging. I've always been insecure of my voice, but his gentle, non-judgmental, teaching method makes me at ease! I leave our sessions motivated and excited to work on new songs and exercises at home.
Not only have I noticed improvements in my voice in such a short time, my band-mates have noticed as well. Can't recommend Robert enough!

Piano Review for Robert Hitz
As part of my goal in life is that when I turned 60 I wanted to have something creative that would enrich and fulfill the latter years of my life. Having watched my aging father play piano was an image I have always appreciated. My father had been my piano teacher as a child and I was ready to get back into piano. I found Robert Hitz, my piano teacher, through TakeLesson.com. I have been taking piano lessons with Robert now for 10 months. Takelessons.com really made it easy to find Robert who was only 5 miles from my home.
It has been the best 10 months that was totally unexpected. What I didn’t experience as a child, that I do now, is I have a genuine love of music that feels inherently inside me. My father and son are both musicians and I now realize I must have a natural instinct for music and a love I never knew.
Robert has made the experience absolutely wonderful with his natural gift for teaching and making you feel totally at ease when you feel totally illiterate and lacking confidence. While I learned piano as a child, I totally lost the ability to read music or remember any scales, chords or composition.
Here is what’s great about Robert. You learn everything you need to learn, but in an unconventional style. He has taught me everything from chord progressions, scales, reading music and being able to totally improvise my own piano compositions. From understanding the basics, he has enabled me to just sit at the piano and make beautiful music that I create. My husband has been in total support and awe of how far I have come in the short 10 month time.
I work full-time and truly have little time to practice. Again, Robert has a total appreciation for the busy life of his students and works around the fact that you may come back each week with having had little to no time to practice the prior lesson. One of the best parts of my lesson is when Robert “drives” and I get to play along improvising to his music. He picks a scale and we just play together. I call it doodling on the piano and it is really awesome to feel so free to just listen and play along making beautiful music together. I walk out of every lesson feeling so elated and motivated knowing I am getting better and better. Practicing is pure pleasure and dramatically reduces the stresses of life and work.
I have a new appreciation for listening to music. I’m an avid power walker and now I listen to piano music while I walk. We fill our home with music and the stress levels just take a nose dive as soon as we put the music on. Listening to the intricacies of music has given me a total peace of mind that was unexpected and a true gift.
Robert has a great following of talented and gifted piano and voice students of all ages (children, teens, college students and adults up into their 80’s). We have been to several of his student concerts. One of my favorite venues is the Cabaret in Germanos Restaurant in Little Italy. Great food, great music and so much fun to get to meet and listen to all of Robert’s students. Robert creates concerts all year round with his students either at his home or in around town. Such a great way to meet new and really interesting people that are different from your usual crowd of friends.
If you are considering taking piano or voice lessons, go for it and meet Robert for yourself. I can’t say enough how great he is as a teacher and now a friend.

Wonderful instructor! Knowledgable, patient, and truly loves teaching. Best of all - the lessons are fun! I highly recommend him.
My son is 4 and Robert is very good at interacting with him. He was able to promote his interest in music. Completely recommend!
We LOOOOVE Mr. Robert! It's always a fun time, he is very patient, funny and truly an awesome teacher!
Robert is a master in his field. He is a kind and gentle soul with a passion for music. He is gifted and talented and humble. That is a rare combination. He is also patient, understanding and entertaining. I have never had a better instructor.
Robert is AWESOME! If you are interested in music, this is your man!!
He is great, listens to your voice and knows when and where you need to improve on.
Great with kids and has a lot of patience. My grandaughter doesnt have to be told to do her lessons since she has been going to Robert she just does them on her own. I used Robert as a teacher for my son back in the 90s.
Robert is a brilliant pianist and teacher
As a father of student I am very impressed with Robert's sensitivity to how each student learns best. He has the valuable skill of knowing when to push and when not to and always seems to find the right way of communicating whatever it is he is trying to teach. Kids require a lot patience and a willingness to respond to them at their level. Frankly, I would find it very difficult to do myself, but his patience seems endless and more than that you can tell he gets great satisfaction from what he does . As a result, my daughter has blossomed into quite a performer with a deep love of music and ongoing interest in learning more.
Easy to see that he loves music and people
Mr. Hitz was gracious with his time and eager to assist us. He was willing to accommodate our special requests such as traveling to our site and teaching particular music.
