About Richard L.
As an undergraduate I had two majors. Music was primary and Communication Studies was secondary. I thought that I loved music because of the beauty of the sound. I labored for hours in a practice room to create the perfect sound. Meanwhile as I delved deeper into my communication degree, I was taught that everything is an argument at some level. Every human being is making a case for some sort of cause. People are communicating at all times even if they are not conscious of it. Everything down to the way I sit is an argument. I might sit up tall while in a business meeting to make a non-verbal argument that I am actively engaged.
As I started to understand the rhetoric of everyday life I slowly realized that I didn't love music for its beautiful sounds alone, but for its communicative properties. Everything's an argument after all! As an artist, I now think a good performance is a successful argument, and an excellent argument has the power to change a person.
