Teaching since:
January 1994

I have always had a love for music. From all the music trivia games my family won't play with me, to my large collection of records, cassettes, and CDs - I am hooked!

I made my solo performance debut at age 7 by singing "It's A Small World" acapella in a school talent show. At age 9 I started taking clarinet lessons where I learned musicianship and how to read music. Throughout my school years I also sang in choir, played tenor saxophone in the school jazz band, and hoofed it in marching band.

During my first year in college I took a beginning guitar class for fun and I never looked back! I studied classical guitar for 3 years and piano for 2 years. I ultimately received a Minor in Music from California State University, Hayward in 1990.

I have been playing guitar for 27 years. I have played professionally in the San Francisco Bay Area in various rock, country, and blues bands as well as playing solo acoustic performances at local coffee houses.

I have been teaching private guitar lessons for 20 years and piano for 10.I like to keep learning fun! I am a very patient, compassionate teacher who will come up with creative ways to explain/demonstrate something new.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music is the most fun activity that people of all ages can enjoy. And learning how to play music should be fun too! When students inquire about taking lessons from me I always ask, "What do you want to learn?" I try to keep students interested by showing them things they want to learn. I also believe in teaching the basics. Whether you want to take piano or guitar lessons I believe you should learn basic musicianship which includes learning to read simple notes and where those notes are on your instrument, rhythm concepts, and tempo. It's easier than you think! The more you know the more you can teach yourself later on, and the more you can collaborate with other musicians.

After 3 or 6 months of taking lessons with me, students will be able to read basic music notation. They will be able to play songs either by their choosing or mine, they will have self-confidence to play songs in front of an audience/friends, and they will have the knowledge to figure out how to play songs on their own.

*** Specialties ***
I studied classical guitar at Cal State Hayward and have taught different finger picking styles as well as genres such as pop and country.

I had only three lessons so far but Rhonda have been great! She is very patient with me and because I have a hard time understanding some things she know how to break it down for me without making me feel incompetent. Very good teacher!

I started taking guitar lessons from Rhonda almost 2 years ago as an adult student with zero musical experience. She immediately made me feel comfortable, and she's great at calibrating her teaching and style to your needs and interests while always building on them. I'm a working mom, so I have limited practice time, but she's always very understanding while still nudging me forward at my own pace. Guitar is something I do for myself, and I can't think of a better companion and leader on that journey than Rhonda!

Rhonda is amazing! Made me feel very comfortable right from the outset. This is my second attempt to learn the guitar. First time was when I was a teenager and I gave up because I tried it on my own. I sure hope Rhonda will be able to help me learn.

Rhonda has a calm and gentle way with my pensive 13 year old daughter. She felt completely at ease after the initial five minute introduction and she has been looking forward to her lessons ever since. Rhonda is a very experienced musician and is versed in many musical genre, which allows her to assign music that will excite the student and makes learning fun.

Seriously the best instructor ever. Rhonda is patient and kind and can connect with you where ever you are in your progression. I started lessons with enthusiasm but some fears of failure, the enthusiasm has been supported well and the fears slowly forgotten because there's always something to practice and be excited about.
When I took some time off from lessons, and returned, just after one lesson my passion resumed again, after seeing Rhonda. I feel like I can ask her about anything.
I'm super glad I signed up for lessons. ~

Excellent teacher

Rhonda is an excellent teacher. My daughter took her first trial piano lesson with her over a year ago, loved her and has been taking lessons from her ever since. She is so nice and patient, works well with kids, has a good way to simplify learning of more complex concepts/skills, keeps the student focused and encouraged, keeps lessons well-paced so that they are challenging yet fun and she tailors her lesson plan based on the student's needs and progress. We are so glad that we found Rhonda!

Very supportive of senior learner

She understands the special needs of a senior learn. Lots of understanding, ability to hear one's fears and concerns, and ability of the learner to practice. She is able to work that into her lesson plan.
