I have experience teaching a wide range of students from young to adult beginners, as well as advanced students preparing for music programs at the college level. I will tailor the lesson to fit each student's level and goals. I am classically trained with Masters of Music in violin performance from Rice University (2013) and Bachelors in Music in violin performance from Florida State University (2011), however, if your interest lies outside classical music, we can work on other genres of music as well! I am currently Assistant Concertmaster of Houston Ballet Orchestra since 2014, and perform frequently with Houston Grand Opera and work as a substitute musician for Houston Symphony. I have over 10 years teaching experience of private lessons in both violin and viola. I have also worked as a chamber coach and sectional coach for Houston Youth Symphony for the past 5 years. I am trying to create more of an online teaching presence with the current situation with the corona virus and many programs being cancelled or postponed, my current schedule is very flexible! If you are looking for an online violin or viola teacher to help you with your goals at any level I will be flexible and happy to work with you to reach those goals!

About Rachel S.

I am a professional violinist and violin and viola teacher. I am currently Assistant Concertmaster of Houston Ballet Orchestra, a position I have held since 2014. I also frequently perform with Houston Grand Opera and work as a substitute violinist for Houston Symphony and other groups in Houston. I graduated from Rice University in 2013 with a Masters of Music degree in violin performance, and Florida State University in 2011 with a Bachelors of Music degree in violin performance.

I have nearly 10 years teaching experience of all levels, ranging from beginning 5 year olds, beginning adults, high school students preparing for college music program auditions, students with autism or other special needs, and everything in between! I work for Houston Youth Symphony for their outreach programs providing lessons and group lessons in the public schools. I also work as a sectional and chamber music coach. I have completed the first two books of Suzuki Violin Book Teacher Training at the Greater Austin Suzuki Institute.

I currently have a very flexible schedule, as all of my upcoming performances and group teaching in the schools have been cancelled/ postponed due to the corona virus! I am therefore trying to increase my online teaching. I am happy to work with each individual to meet his or her musical goals, whatever those may be!

I have been taking lessons from Rachel for almost two years. She usually teaches me in her home but we now do online lessons. Rachel helps me with my middle school orchestra pieces and we also follow the Suzuki series and music theory. She is patient and understands how to help me become a better violin player.

She likes to focus on the positive and is never negative. She’s always supportive and always takes time away to help me no matter what.

Ms. Shepard has been the best violin teacher I have had. Being in high school and having trouble with schedules and other things like that usually would be hard but Ms.Shepard makes it easy to reschedule. She also works very hard to make sure you understand all the instructions and understands that sometimes you don’t have time to practice during the week. I have been very happy with all of the lessons that I have been to and I am planning on continuing taking lessons as well.

Ms.Shepard has been an amazing private lesson teacher. Her methods of teaching are innovated, she provides step by step detailed instructions based on each students progression along a piece of music.Overall her teaching methods I can say have proven successful. I have grown as a musician and performer thanks to Ms.Shepards detailed attention and work ethic with her students.

Ms. Shepard has been my violin tutor for the past year and a half. She has been very understanding of my financial problems when it came to affording lessons and has helped to support me in my goals in majoring in music. She goes above and beyond when it comes to caring for her students as a teacher. She is a teacher that any student would be more than lucky to have as a teacher as she has helped me get into the Houston Youth Symphony, various music programs to multiple music schools for college. I highly recommend her to any student.
