    About Dr. Philip R.

“The essence of healthy vocal production resides in the breath and a relaxed body.” - William. Miller, Professor of Vocal Health - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign “The aim of education is not knowledge, but action.” –Dale Carnegie The purpose of this studio is to accommodate the practical needs of serious singers by equipping them for effective performance stamina and longevity. We teach tension-free vocal production from the body core for effective use of the breath. After vocal study and performance throughout undergraduate school through doctoral study at the University of Illinois with renown professor William Miller I have established an effective practice as a vocal instructor and coach. We teach those who are passionate about developing their vocal gift – those who desire to intelligently use their voice with passion and commitment to communicate what composers have imagined their songs to convey. Those who utilize the voice for performance are responsible to invest time and energy into the proper maintenance of their instrument. For effective vocal production, it is essential to acquire and nurture knowledge of healthy vocal practices in order to sustain the vitality and inherent resonance of the voice. Vocal Health is fundamental for the vocal performer since “the human body is the instrument.” Therefore, the development of physical stamina in the “body core” is essential for longevity of the vocal instrument. *** Lesson Details *** Most singers have issues with tension while performing. We specialize in awakening students to effectively maintaining a relaxed body and "body core" while performing. Voice lessons are therefore initiated to diagnose and correct unnatural body tension while singing. My motto is "if you don't do it when you speak, don't do it while you sing!" Singing must be natural to be effective. "Singing is speaking on pitch." Lessons consist of: 1. Evaluation of body tension and elimination thereof. 2. Learning how to maintain a relaxed body and "body core" so breath is effective and controlled. 3. Establishing a relaxed open throat so tones are clear and unfettered. 4. Recognition of how to use the air and "body core" energize all vocal registers. 5. Recognition of how to modify principle vowels while performing in various vocal registers. 6. Study how to breathe effectively for various phrases and in different vocal registers. After 3 months students will be adept at navigating through the various multitasks of singing. Student confidence will be elevated and their performance level will have increased. *** Studio Equipment *** Piano *** Specialties *** Teach tension-free vocal production from the body core Classical singers, Choral Singers; Popular Music singers Establishing Vocal Stamina, Establish Body Core Breath Control,
