Music has been the focus of my life since I was 10 years old. I love teaching students of all levels, ages, and styles! I feel that proper technique is essential for students to attain their goals. I start beginners correctly, so they don’t run into issues later, and have a great rapport with kids. I can help intermediate and advanced students correct issues that are hindering their progress. I teach students the whys of playing, not just the hows. Students’ goals are of utmost importance to me, and I customize my lessons to best help them achieve whatever they want to do. Lessons should not only be informative, but lots of fun! Let’s get going! After graduating Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music, I began my career in Atlanta, playing guitar and bass with many internationally known artists. I was also guitarist for the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Pops Orchestra, Fox Theater Orchestra, Theater of the Stars Orchestra, and the Atlanta Symphony, and played with the touring productions of many Broadway shows. I taught the Jazz Program at Georgia State University for 6 years, which included improvisation, arranging, theory, guitar labs, small groups, guitar, and bass at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree levels. I later moved to Chicago and enjoyed a thriving career as one of the city's top studio musicians, playing electric and acoustic guitars, bass, ukulele, dobro, mandolin, slide guitar, lap steel, and banjo on records and hundreds of national and international commercials. I also played with Jazz sax great Richie Cole, Jazz guitarist Larry Coryell, and rock musicians bassist Darryl Jones (Rolling Stones/Sting), guitarist Jeff Baxter (Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan), and drummer Todd Sucherman (Styx). I currently live in the Detroit area. I have made my living solely as a musician for my entire adult life.

Peter is a master musician. We used him for years while he was in Savannah. Our daughter started with him when she was six. He is patient and engaging. Probably our favorite part about the Peter Hennes experience is his ability to connect with young minds at their level - I can appreciate this much more since our covid in-house learning experience. From a parent's perspective, Mr. Hennes is pleasant, flexible and a pleasure to work with - we asked for our daughter to focus on different things multiple times and he made it easy. He also turned into a family friend of ours during his time living in Savannah; we wish him the best!
I've been a self taught guitarist for over 20 years until I started taking lessons with Peter. I was interested in improving my technical & improvisation skills as well as learning music theory & harmony in relation to Jazz. Peter has been a great teacher and is very knowledgeable about Jazz Theory/Composition and even simpler topics like fingerings or questions about gear. I've only been taking lessons for a couple of months and already notice big improvements in my playing ability & understanding of music theory & harmony. I highly recommend Peter as a teacher for a student of any skill level.
Peter has been teaching my 14yo for a couple years now and transitioned him from electric to jazz guitar, preparing him for auditions for the band in high school. My son as a freshman made the advanced band which I credit to Peter’s help in getting him up to speed through a pandemic! Great teacher!
