Have you ever seen a band playing and wanted to join the fun? Do you want to play along with your favorite songs and develop a musical style of your own? I can walk you through the basics, from tuning to strumming your first open chords, and get you playing songs you love in no time! You'll learn strumming and picking techniques (including fingerpicking), barre chords, standard progressions, and basic soloing, as well. We'll also learn the basics of music theory, so that you understand how songs are constructed, so that you can run with your knowledge and write songs of your own!

About Pat B.

I'm a lifelong musician, with a foundation in classical piano, which I began studying at 4 years old. At 12, I performed at Carnegie Hall. But while I was studying piano, the music of the 60's and 70's was an ever-present influence, and I found myself drawn to the guitar. Players like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Paul Simon showed me just how expressive six strings could be, and I jumped in!

In the past 15 years, I have played in many bands, and worked as a solo guitarist for 5 years, playing folk, rock, pop, blues, and reggae. I studied film and television at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where I focused on recording and sound design. I also completed courses in music theory, and was a finalist in NYU's Ultraviolet Live contest for an original song. Today, I work as a production sound recordist and sound designer, and continue to write and record original music.

Throughout my life, guitar has been a constant companion, serving as an emotional and creative outlet, and most importantly, a source of fun! We'll begin lessons by talking about what you want to learn, and from there we'll work to meet your goals at your pace. Whether you're a complete beginner or know the basics and are looking to get to the next level, I would love to help you! I can teach you how to tune, change strings, and understand the fretboard. I can to teach you how to strum along to your favorite songs, how to accompany yourself while singing, and to understand the structure of the songs we learn. I want to get you to a place where you feel you can make the music you play your own.

Due to the pandemic, I am only teaching online for now, but as things open up we can do in person lessons in my home studio. If you are interested in learning recording techniques, we can incorporate those into lessons, as well.
